Blessing House is a children’s crisis care facility in Lorain County that cares for children birth through age 12 when their families are experiencing a crisis. We are a residential facility open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
We are now taking applications for a Food Service Cook Position. Part-Time Early Morning/Afternoon ( Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday)
Other shifts available, PRN
Meals and snacks are prepared using a fixed three-week rotating menu prepared according to the guidelines provided by state licensing authorities. Meals are prepared onsite in the Blessing House kitchen for 10-20 children and adults.
Responsibilities include:
- Preparing and serving meals and snacks at designated times. Clearing away, tidying and cleaning the kitchen and dining room including removal and disposal of garbage.
- Adapting meals to accommodate special needs (allergies, dietary restrictions)
- Reviewing menus and making meal adjustments as needed
- Coordinating food and household supply inventories with Shelter Manager
- Managing food inventory efficiently including perishable items and sell-by dates for non-perishables including management of donations
- Keeping dining chairs and tables, appliances, kitchen pots, pans and work surfaces clean and in good condition/working order at all times
- Ensuring refrigerators are clean and out-of-date items discarded
Education/Experience:
- Two years’ experience cooking food for and serving large groups of people is desirable.
Job Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must be able to pass a background check and not be listed on the national sex offender database.
- Must pass First Aid and CPR certification courses every 2 years (Courses provided by Blessing House.)
- Must complete any training or courses required to maintain employment.
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language
- Must demonstrate knowledge of recipe implementation, general nutrition, large quantity food preparation and food handling safety
- Must be able to adapt recipes to accommodate dietary restrictions, including but not limited to food allergies and religious restrictions.
- Must demonstrate ability to use basic food preparation methods using standard kitchen equipment
- Must be able to maintain all equipment used in cooking, food preparation, food storage and cleaning/sanitation in a safe and efficient manner
Personal skills:
- Must have good written and oral communication skills.
- Must have good attention to detail and organizational skills
- Must have the ability to make independent decisions in a logical, responsible, and compassionate manner.
- Must have knowledge of basic mathematics and measurements necessary for food preparation
Physical requirements – Must be able to:
- Must be able to stand for extended periods of time
- Operate standard kitchen and housekeeping equipment in a safe manner
- Speak and hear to be able to exchange accurate information
- Frequently move supplies weighing up to 50 pounds

Job Type: Part-time (15-20 hours a week):
Shift times available: Monday 6:30AM to 1:30PM, Thursday 4:00PM - 8:00PM, Friday 6:30AM to 1:30PM, and Saturday 6:30AM to 1:30PM plus other days/shifts available as PRN
Salary: $13.50 /hour
