Position Information:
Position Title: Aquatic Instructor - Youth and Family Swim Lessons
Pay Range: $14.00 - $18.00 per hour
Reports to: Anderson YMCA Director
Position Summary:
The Aquatic instructor teaches swim lessons for children ages 6 months to 14 years, ensuring a safe, fun, structured learning environment rooted in water safety, confidence-building, and YMCA swim program standards.
Programs Taught:
- Youth group lessons (Ages 6-14) 30 minute weekly lessons; Swim basics classes; skills include swim, float, swim and jump, push, turn, grab; swim strokes: skills include swim mechanics in four basic swim strokes - freestyle, back, fly, and breast.
- Preschool Lessons: (Ages 3-5) 30 minute weekly lessons focused on safety, fundamentals, and confidence. Skills include swim, float, swim & jump, push, turn, grab.
- Parent / Child Lessons (Ages 6 months to 36 months) 30 minute lessons building comfort, safety, readiness skills, and parent education.
Essential Duties:
- Teach YMCA water safety and swimming skills according to curriculum and class description.
- Group participants accurately by skill level to support successful learning
- Maintain a safe environment through vigilant supervision and proactive instruction.
- Communicate progress and expectations with parent and guardians.
- Prepare lesson plans and maintain attendance records.
- Set up and tear down teaching equipment as needed.
- Promote YMCA programs and provide excellent member service.
Qualifications:
- Minimum age - 16.
- CPR / AED & first aid certification (or ability to obain within 30 days)
- Strong swimming competency; ability to demonstrate swim skills safely.
- Prior experience working with children is preferred.
- Strong communication skills with children, parents, & families.
- Must complete YMCA Swim Instructor training.
- All certifications must remain current throughout employment.
- Child Abuse prevention training required within 30 days of hire date (YMCA national standard)
- Must successfully complete a background check upon offer of employment.
- Prefer - successfully completed an AHJ recongized lifeguard training course offered by an AHJ recognized training agency or Red Cross Lifeguard training course and possess a currrent certificate from said agency.
