Job Title: Medical Assistant-Provider (Non-Exempt Position)
General Summary of Duties: Provides supportive care to a busy OB/GYN provider. Must be able to perform intake duties as well as assist with set up in rooms, minor procedures and managing/tracking specimens etc. Administers injections Performs phlebotomy and other lab tests as needed. Provides excellent customer service to all patients.
Reports to: Clinical Services Manager
Supervises: None
Typical Physical Demands:
- Requires full range of body motion including handling and possibly lifting patients.
- Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
- Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Requires hand-eye coordination and manual and finger dexterity.
- Requires normal range of hearing and eye sight.
- Requires, at times, working under stressful conditions or under irregular hours.
OSHA Employee Exposure Classification: 1
Typical Working Conditions: Potential exposure to blood, body fluids, communicable diseases, toxic substances, medications and other conditions common to a medical office practice. Involves daily communication with care providers, co-workers, patients and visitors.
Example of Duties: (This list does not include all duties that may be assigned)
Provides continual support for provider in busy OB/GYN setting. Must be a self starter and organized in managing multiple priorities.
- May perform patient intake including vital signs, medical history and medication review.
- May performs phlebotomy as needed, obtains blood and urine specimens, and administers medications as directed.
- Cleans, stocks and straightens exam rooms, own work space and other assigned areas in the office.
- Provides basic patient education and instruction.
- Assists with procedures as needed and administers prescribed medications in accordance with clinical standards.
- Maintains a good working relationship with providers, patients and co-workers.
- Maintains medical equipment, clean and sterilize instruments maintaining compliance with standards.
- Assists Clinical Service Manager and other team members as needed.
- Maintains compliance with OSHA, CLIA and HIPPA regulations or other guidelines for the clinical setting
- Maintains strictest confidentiality.
- Attends all required meetings.
- Performs other delegated work duties as assigned.
Performance Requirements
Knowledge:
- Medical practice and care to assist in giving patient care
- Examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures
- Medical equipment and medications to deliver patient care
- Common safety procedures and precautions to establish a safe work environment
Skill:
- Assisting with a variety of treatments and procedures, as needed
- Administration of medications in an appropriate manner
- Taking and evaluating vital signs
- Maintaining records and recording test results
Abilities:
- Interpret, adapt and apply policies, procedures and guidelines.
- React calmly and efficiently in emergency situations
- Maintain effective and professional working relationships with patients, co-workers and the general public
- Clear and empathetic communication
Education:
High School Diploma or GED
Certification or Registration from an accredited program for Medical Assistants.
Experience:
Two (2) years of clinical office experience with Phlebotomy and patient intake experience.
At least one year working one on one with provider in supporting their patient care activities
Experience with an Electronic Health Record essential. Athena experience desireable.
Certification/Licensure:
Current Credentialed Medical Assistant-preferably form American Association of Medical Assistants or other nationally recognized organization.
CPR/BLS certification required (or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment)
