Direct Support Professional Job Description
CPR and Med Administration certification are required for this position.
Direct support professionals (DSPs) are people who work directly with Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in their homes and in their community. The DSP is responsible to provide direct services including PERSONAL CARE AND HYGIENE- helping individuals to shower or bathe, toileting individuals and changing briefs and helping individuals to dress; MEAL PREPARATION AND FEEDING- helping individuals to eat and prepare food per diet needs; ADMINISTER MEDICATION- helping individuals take their prescribed medications; HOUSEKEEPING- maintaining a clean, safe living environment - washing dishes, laundry, mopping floors; COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES- accompanying individuals into the community for social or recreational activities. A DSP is also an advocate, helping people in communicating needs, self-expression, and goals as well as assuring justice and equality in community life.
A Direct Support Professional will:
- Respect individual rights and confidentiality. Be a role model, promote teamwork and help to make a positive living environment.
- Read, know, and implement Individual’s Service Plan and document services provided.
- Remain alert to individuals’ behavior/physical changes and notify immediate supervisor.
- Report all pertinent medical information to nurses and follow nurses’ directions.
Additional Requirements
- Excellent knowledge of emergency response and first aid (CPR)
- Knowledge of housekeeping activities and cooking
- Willingness to adhere to rules and regulations
- Physical endurance
- High school diploma or equivalent
