Staff Accountant – Property Management / Real Estate
We are seeking an experienced Staff Accountant to join our Accounting Department. This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional with property management or real estate accounting experience who is looking to take ownership of accounting for a multifamily real estate portfolio.
Yardi Voyager experience is strongly preferred; however, candidates with strong property accounting experience using other real estate accounting systems are encouraged to apply.
Position Summary
The Staff Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records for the Company's real estate portfolio and supporting monthly and year-end financial reporting. The position reports directly to the Controller/CFO and works closely with Property Management, Accounts Payable, Leasing, and other departments.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, and account adjustments.
- Perform monthly bank reconciliations for multiple operating and trust accounts.
- Reconcile general ledger accounts and research and resolve discrepancies.
- Review tenant billings, rent adjustments, and other accounting transactions.
- Review leasing and accounting information for accuracy and completeness.
- Assist with tenant accounts receivable reconciliations.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Prepare budget-to-actual and prior-period variance analyses.
- Assist with month-end and year-end closing.
- Prepare year-end schedules and supporting documentation for the Company's external CPA.
- Assist with annual operating budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections.
- Prepare Forms 1099 and assist with business licenses, property tax reporting, unit registrations, and other regulatory filings.
- Prepare financial reports required by lenders and assist with loan reporting requirements.
- Assist with accounting and financial due diligence for acquisitions, refinancing, and special projects.
- Work closely with Property Management and other departments to ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Identify accounting discrepancies and recommend improvements to accounting procedures and internal controls.
- Perform special projects and other duties as assigned by the Controller/CFO.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- Minimum 3 years of accounting experience.
- Property management or real estate accounting experience strongly preferred.
- Yardi Voyager experience strongly preferred.
- Experience with other property management accounting systems will also be considered.
- Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statements.
- Working knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple properties, priorities, and deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has experience handling accounting for multiple residential or multifamily properties, understands the relationship between property operations and the general ledger, and is comfortable researching discrepancies and taking ownership of assigned properties.
Experience with Yardi Voyager is highly valued, but we are also interested in experienced property accountants who have worked extensively with comparable real estate accounting platforms and can quickly learn Yardi.
Pay: $32.00 - $35.00 per hour
