Position Summary
The Addiction Clinician provides comprehensive behavioral health and substance use disorder services, including biopsychosocial assessments, ASAM level of care determinations, individual counseling, group facilitation, treatment planning, crisis intervention, care coordination, and referrals. The clinician collaborates with multidisciplinary staff, referral sources, families, and community partners to ensure clients receive appropriate, timely, and effective care.
This position requires excellent clinical judgment, strong documentation skills, and a commitment to trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and recovery-oriented practices.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesClinical Assessment & Intake
- Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial and substance use assessments.
- Utilize the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria to determine the appropriate level of care.
- Complete Addiction Severity Index (ASI) and other required screening and assessment tools.
- Screen clients for withdrawal risk and determine the need for detoxification, psychiatric evaluation, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), or higher levels of care.
- Conduct suicide risk, violence risk, and crisis assessments when appropriate.
- Develop accurate DSM-5 diagnoses within scope of practice.
Treatment Planning
- Develop individualized treatment plans in collaboration with clients.
- Establish measurable goals and objectives based on client strengths and identified needs.
- Review and update treatment plans according to regulatory requirements and clinical necessity.
- Encourage clients to actively participate in treatment planning and decision-making.
Counseling Services
- Provide individual counseling utilizing evidence-based practices.
- Facilitate Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) groups Monday through Friday as assigned.
- Provide psychoeducation regarding addiction, relapse prevention, recovery skills, mental health, and wellness.
- Utilize Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and other evidence-based interventions.
- Support clients throughout all phases of treatment and recovery.
Care Coordination
- Coordinate services with referral sources, healthcare providers, probation/parole officers, family members, peer recovery specialists, and other community partners.
- Make referrals for medical, psychiatric, vocational, housing, employment, and social support services.
- Maintain communication with referral agencies to promote continuity of care.
- Collaborate with Intake Coordinators to schedule assessments and admissions.
Documentation & Compliance
- Complete timely and accurate clinical documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, COMAR regulations, and organizational policies.
- Ensure documentation meets Maryland Behavioral Health Administration (BHA), Medicaid, CARF, and payer requirements.
- Participate in utilization review and quality assurance activities.
- Maintain compliance with Recovery Center of Maryland policies, licensing standards, accreditation requirements, and ethical standards.
Team Participation
- Participate in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings.
- Attend required staff meetings, supervision, trainings, and professional development activities.
- Provide consultation and education to staff, families, and community partners as appropriate.
- Promote a positive, respectful, and collaborative work environment.
Minimum QualificationsEducation
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Human Services, or a closely related behavioral health field.
Preferred
- Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Marriage & Family Therapy, or related discipline.
Licensure
One or more of the following is preferred:
- Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC)
- Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC)
- Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW)
- Licensed Certified Social Worker–Clinical (LCSW-C)
- Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW)
- Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC)
- Certified Supervised Counselor-Alcohol and Drug (CSC-AD)
- Certified Associate Counselor-Alcohol and Drug (CAC-AD)

Experience
Preferred:
- One or more years of experience providing behavioral health or substance use disorder treatment.
- Experience conducting ASAM assessments.
- Experience working with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
- Experience facilitating psychoeducational and process groups.
- Experience using Electronic Health Records (EHR/EMR).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of substance use disorders and recovery principles.
- Understanding of trauma-informed care and harm reduction practices.
- Knowledge of DSM-5 diagnostic criteria.
- Knowledge of ASAM Criteria and treatment placement.
- Excellent assessment and interviewing skills.
- Strong crisis intervention abilities.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
- Strong documentation and computer proficiency.
- Ability to build therapeutic rapport with diverse populations.

Working Conditions
- Office-based clinical setting.
