FUNCTIONS:
Peer Specialists are individuals who have lived with a behavioral health condition (mental health and/or substance abuse). Provides or ensures the provision of services needed to clients on a regular and emergency basis. Meets with team members and supervisors throughout the day. Transports clients to appointments in the community and to secure needed resources. Visits clients in jail or hospitals, as needed.
Based on client needs, peer specialists offer encouragement through relationship building; acts as an advocate and role model for clients (advocates with and for the client and teaches the client self advocacy skills); provides education on wellness; provides community networking and linkage with social, recreational, spiritual, or vocational resources; encourages and supports participation in self help groups and provides specific information about various groups that may be helpful to the client; mentors the client; helps the client navigate the system (coordination of services, as needed; supports personal recovery goals and builds upon resiliency; and provides life skills (life skills are basic skills used to handle problems and questions commonly encountered in daily life, such as; problem solving skills, accepting responsibility, money management, and honoring commitments. Self care skills such as: cooking, laundry, and shopping are also essential life skills).
Peer Specialists engage clients, serve as a role model, provide hope to others about the reality of recovery, motivates through hope and inspiration, and help the client served to articulate his/her personal goals and identify ways to reach those goals. Represents Archways' and the clients served at community meetings
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Degree preferred, high school diploma or GED required.
2. Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License and dependable transportation.
3. Required to drive throughout Broward County for home visits and appointments with clients. There may be travel outside of Broward County.
4. Have a Certified Recovery Peer Specialist: Adult, certification from the Florida Certification Board or be able to become certified within 6 months of hire.
5. Must be able to use a telephone, computer, copy/fax machine and agency van and /or car.
6. Required to acquire and maintain jail clearance.
7. Prefer experience with working with individuals with a serious mental illness and co-occurring disorders.
8. Must have some understanding of the signs, symptoms and necessary interventions.
9. Prefer some understanding of the effects of substance use and mental illness.
10. Must have good communication and interpersonal skills.
11. Good writing skills and organizational abilities.

- High school or equivalent (Required)
Experience:
- Substance Use: 1 year (Preferred)
- Mental Health: 1 year (Preferred)
License/Certification:
- Certified Peer Specialist certification (Preferred)
