Assistant Coach Expectations & Responsibilities
The Assistant Coach is an essential member of the coaching staff whose primary responsibility is to support the Head Coach while helping create a positive, organized, and development-focused environment for every athlete. Assistant Coaches should demonstrate professionalism, initiative, teamwork, and a willingness to serve wherever needed to help the team succeed.
The Assistant Coach serves as a secondary source of communication and support for players and families. The Assistant Coach should support and reinforce the direction established by the Head Coach.
Assistant Coaches should actively contribute to every practice. Whenever possible, coaching responsibilities should be divided to increase instructional opportunities. For example, while the Head Coach works with offensive systems, the Assistant Coach may work with defensive skills or serve receive. Assistant Coaches should assist in creating an organized practice environment.
Assistant Coaches play a significant role in collecting valuable team information. Accurate video, statistics, and attendance records are valuable tools for player development and club operations.
Assistant Coaches often contribute to the organizational details that help create an outstanding team experience.
Assistant Coaches should help maintain club equipment throughout the season. Equipment that remains safe and functional should continue to be used until replacement is necessary. Prompt reporting allows the club to plan repairs and replacements appropriately.
Assistant Coaches are expected to be actively engaged throughout tournament days. Assistant Coaches should remain engaged throughout the entire competition and anticipate needs before they arise.
Assistant Coaches represent Elite Volleyball and should uphold the same professional standards expected of every member of the coaching staff.
The Assistant Coach’s primary role is to strengthen the effectiveness of the Head Coach and the overall success of the team. While healthy coaching discussions are encouraged, the Head Coach has final authority regarding lineups, positions, playing time, rotations, and competitive decisions. Assistant Coaches are expected to support and reinforce those decisions in front of players and parents.
The Assistant Coach should constantly look for opportunities to make the team better. Successful Assistant Coaches understand that many of the small details—organization, communication, statistics, video, equipment, attendance, player encouragement, and team culture—often have a significant impact on a team’s success. An outstanding Assistant Coach is dependable, observant, proactive, and committed to helping both the Head Coach and every athlete have the best possible experience throughout the season.
