Behind-the-Wheel Driving Instructor
Greenlight Driver Training — Danville, CA
Do you love working with young people and want a role where you help them build skills and confidence for life? Come coach with Greenlight!
Learning to drive hasn’t changed in 40 years, and Greenlight is out to fix that. We're a start-up based in Danville, California that's changing the way teens learn to drive. Our simulator-enhanced driver training teaches new drivers the core skills they need to drive safely before they get behind the wheel in real life. Having recently opened our first training center in Danville, Greenlight is already making a positive impact in the community and improving the learning-to-drive experience for teens and their families. Check us out at https://greenlightdrivertraining.com to learn more about our training programs.
The Role
As a Greenlight Behind-the-Wheel Driving Instructor, you'll work directly with our students as they progress through our curriculum and make the transition from our Simulator-Based training to In-Car sessions out on the road. Don’t worry, we aren’t looking for experience as a driving instructor. A desire to deliver killer customer service, and a willingness to learn new skills are the most important qualifications for this position. We will teach you what you need to know to succeed and create a great experience for our clients. That said, this position is part coach, part system operator, and part customer service. In this role you'll:
- Provide students with foundational coaching and constructive training feedback in-car as they progress through each driving session.
- Deliver a post-session report and video debrief for the parent(s) and student using Greenlight's automated systems.
- Answer general driving-related questions and help new drivers build their skills and gain confidence.
Administration, scheduling, and other customer-related activities are handled by Greenlight's office staff, so you can focus on the students. And here's the best part: you'll only go on the road with students who have successfully completed Greenlight's simulator training and been approved to transition to in-car training. If a student isn't ready to make the move from the simulator to the real car, they will spend more time in the simulator until they are. That makes for a much safer, more efficient, and more effective training program, and takes the stress out of taking a new driver out on the road for the first time.
At Greenlight, we are very focused on becoming a staple of our local community and helping our students with this important life skill. Many of our clients arrive with some anxiety about driving, and we work hard to help them relax and gain the confidence they’ll need to succeed behind the wheel. You'll have the opportunity to help a young person master an important life skill every single day.
No Driving-Instructor Experience Required — We'll Train You
We are not looking for prior driving-instructor experience. We train every instructor in the Greenlight methodology and curriculum from the ground up, and we genuinely prefer candidates who are new to instructing so we can teach our approach the right way from day one. What matters most to us is a genuine desire to coach, a talent for connecting with teens, and a willingness to learn.
You'd make a great Behind-the-Wheel Instructor if you:
- Have experience coaching, tutoring, mentoring, or teaching kids and teens — whether in youth or high school sports, the classroom, camps, after-school programs, or similar settings.
- Are a natural “people person” who enjoys meeting others and building rapport with young people.
- Know how to keep a nervous teenager calm, focused, and encouraged.
- Understand how to create a great customer experience and take pride in the quality of your work.
- Appreciate the art and skill of driving.
- Are open to learning new things. (We're constantly refining our training curriculum).
- Are comfortable with responsibilities like customer interaction and in-car safety.
- Can Stay cool and calm when you encounter the unexpected.
- Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and love helping people improve.
Required Paid Training & DMV Licensure
Before you begin working directly with clients, we'll give you the tools and knowledge you need to be successful through our paid training program. You'll start by reviewing our Simulator-Based Driver Training Sessions to understand the full customer experience, followed by the DMV mandated in-car training (20 hours) and online coursework provided by our instructor training partner, Apex Driving School. This training program will be conducted over multiple days of 4-hour training sessions that combine with the simulator time for a total of 25 hours of paid training.
Following completion of the required DMV training activities, you'll complete the DMV licensing process for licensure as a Driving Instructor.
