ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION
Asylee Women Enterprise (AWE) is a Baltimore-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supporting asylum seekers, immigrant survivors of trafficking, and other forced migrants of all genders as they rebuild their lives in Maryland. Founded in 2011, AWE provides trauma-informed, holistic services designed to address the complex and interconnected needs of individuals and families seeking humanitarian protection in the United States. AWE’s services include intensive case management, immigration legal services, access to medical and mental health care through onsite community partners, youth programming, housing and food security support, emergency assistance, and English language classes.
JOB SUMMARY
The Asylum Seeker Advocate provides comprehensive case management services to asylum seekers and other forced migrants as part of AWE’s Advocacy Team. The Advocate works closely with clients to identify and address medical, social, legal, financial, housing, and other needs; develop individualized service plans; connect clients with community resources; and help clients overcome barriers to accessing services. This position is fully in-person and based at AWE’s office in Baltimore, Maryland.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct client assessments and work collaboratively with clients to develop, implement, and regularly update individualized service plans.
- Assist clients in addressing needs related to healthcare, mental health, housing, food security, education and school enrollment, employment, transportation, public benefits, documentation, and other areas affecting stability and well-being.
- Make referrals to medical, mental health, legal, and other community-based services and help clients identify and overcome barriers to accessing those services.
- Assist eligible clients with applications for public benefits and other social support programs.
- Accompany clients to medical, social service, school, legal, and other community appointments as needed.
- Provide transportation to clients for necessary service-related activities when appropriate.
- Advocate on behalf of clients and collaborate with community partners, government agencies, healthcare providers, schools, and other service providers to help clients access needed resources and services.
- Maintain accurate, detailed, and up-to-date case notes and client records in accordance with AWE policies and grant requirements.
- Complete required case documentation, data entry, and reporting within established timelines and assist with data, narrative, and financial reporting as requested.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications
- Fluency in French, Spanish, or Arabic, in addition to proficiency in written and spoken English.
- Relevant professional experience in case management, human services, social services, community-based services, or a related field.
- Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills and the ability to build trusting relationships with individuals from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Ability to communicate effectively with individuals who are learning English and/or have limited literacy.
- Ability to manage multiple clients, priorities, deadlines, and urgent needs in a fast-paced direct-service environment.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, including the ability to maintain timely and accurate case documentation.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a diverse team and with external community partners.
- Comfort using Microsoft Office, databases, and web-based data entry and case management systems.
- Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries and client confidentiality.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule based on client and program needs, including occasional evening and weekend work.
- Valid driver’s license and regular access to a personal, insured vehicle for work-related travel.
Preferred Qualifications
- One or more years of experience providing case management or direct services to immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, survivors of trafficking, or other underserved populations.
- Experience working in a nonprofit, social services, or community-based organization.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed and client-centered approaches to case management.
- Experience working with community-based organizations, healthcare providers, schools, government agencies, or other social service systems.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
This position is based in AWE’s Baltimore office. The position requires some travel throughout Baltimore and the surrounding area to accompany clients to appointments, provide transportation, and connect clients with community resources.
