Overview
Salt Lake, Utah Style & Design and Utah Bride & Groom magazines are seeking a detail-oriented professional with a great eye and excellent editorial design skills to help create magazines that capture our readers’ attention through engaging layout and design. The designer should have a good knowledge of Salt Lake City and Utah. They will have worked on and helped manage multifaceted design projects and possess the technical skills to create a wide range of print and digital elements for consumers and B2B publications. Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite—especially InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator—required.
This challenging position requires someone who is organized and self-directed, capable of conceiving and carrying projects through from inception to press, and is an energetic team player who works well with others, and is comfortable performing in a highly collaborative creative environment. Candidates must live in the Salt Lake area. This is an in-office position.
Qualifications:
- BFA or BA in graphic design, art, or a similar field of study is desired.
- At least two years of editorial design experience working in both print and digital mediums.
- Ability to work with editors to help concept layouts that serve our readers and other end users.
- Open to receiving critique and able to offer constructive feedback about design and content (no thin skins here).
- An eye for grammar and grammatical styles.
- Experience creating compelling narratives with typography, photo selection and solid design principles.
- Proven ability to juggle multiple priorities, plan forward and meet deadlines
- Expertise with Mac-based InDesign, InCopy, Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator
- Basic understanding of copyright and fair-use issues for images and text.
Responsibilities and Duties Include:
- Work with the Art Director to maintain publication style, brand identity, quality and design excellence for Salt Lake, Utah Style & Design, Utah Bride & Groom magazines.
- Create and maintain the look and feel of magazines to complement the editorial direction of JES publications
- Collaborate on story and issue concepts with the Art Director and Editors of individual magazines to meet the editorial vision.
- Create and assist in the creation of graphic design and illustration elements.
- Photo editing/manipulation and color correction
- Final file preparation for both digital and print products.
- Maintain publication schedules, timelines, and deadlines within art, editorial and Web departments to meet print and digital deadlines
- Additional production and graphic design for client advertisements, custom publications, special sections, events/invitations and inserts
- Designing elements for web, social media, digital marketing and advertising.
- Maintenance and backup of photo and file archives.
- Understanding of file and version management systems, naming conventions, and working in shared documents.
- Learning and adapting to new technologies, processes and techniques with continuous attention to innovations and developments in best practices across various platforms and software to improve workflow and overall quality of end deliverables.
Also Helpful:
- Knowledge of print and print production
- Experience with Trello or other similar workflow management systems
- Marketing, SEO and networking strategy experience
- Basic understanding of copyright and fair use policies and best practices
- Curiosity about and affection for life in Utah and the Mountainwest.
Schedule:
- Standard weekday shifts with some weekends and evenings for events, photoshoots and special projects.

- Bachelor's (preferred but relevant experience considered)
