We are seeking six experienced Senior Paralegals to provide professional litigation support services in San Antonio, Texas, in support of U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Western Texas Border Fence requirements.
The Senior Paralegals will assist attorneys with federal litigation matters involving legal and records research, witness interviews, title reviews, landowner complaints, case-file management, document preparation, courtroom support, and trial preparation. This position requires strong legal drafting, research, organizational, analytical, and case-management skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct legal research and records research in support of assigned cases.
- Assist attorneys with witness interviews and prepare detailed records of interviews for use in depositions and other litigation proceedings.
- Clearly identify themselves as contractor personnel during telephone and in-person interviews.
- Review title commitments for accuracy and prepare deed-history summaries.
- Draft and prepare correspondence, pleadings, motions, proposed orders, and other litigation documents under attorney direction.
- Prepare Declarations of Taking Reports, Amended Declarations of Taking Reports, complaints, notices, joint motions to close, and motions to suppress.
- Summarize depositions, hearings, interviews, and other transcripts.
- Research and prepare responses to landowner complaints.
- Document landowner complaints and responses in a monthly report.
- Maintain case files and organize, track, and control exhibits and other case-related materials used during depositions and trials.
- Support attorneys in the courtroom by preparing exhibit cross-references and screening documents for relevance and privilege according to established guidelines.
- Identify relevant recordkeeping systems and determine the types of records maintained within those systems.
- Gather, sort, review, and interpret information from paper records, electronic databases, and other computer information systems.
- Develop statistics and tabulations, including standard deviations, regression analyses, and weighting, to identify leads and provide supporting data for litigation.
- Prepare charts, graphs, tables, and other visual materials to communicate analytical findings.
- Analyze information and develop recommendations and supporting justifications for attorney review.
- Design and implement systems and procedures for tracking, controlling, and managing case files, exhibits, and other case-specific materials.
- Prepare required litigation-support reports and monthly activity reports.
- Perform other related duties as assigned and within the scope of the contract.
Minimum Qualifications
- A two-year degree in Paralegal Studies, Legal Studies, Criminal Justice, Business, Business Administration, Finance, English, Journalism, or another related field; or
- A high school diploma or equivalent combined with a Paralegal Certificate.
- At least three years of experience providing legal support, including experience independently drafting correspondence, pleadings, motions, and proposed orders.
- Demonstrated experience performing legal research, records research, litigation-document preparation, case-file management, and other comparable litigation-support services.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
- U.S. citizenship, as required by the federal contract.
- Ability to undergo the required background investigation and obtain favorable adjudication.
Preferred Qualifications
- Legal experience involving real estate matters.
- Experience involving mineral interests or oil and gas matters.
- Experience reviewing title commitments and preparing deed-history summaries.
- Experience supporting attorneys with landowner complaints, depositions, courtroom proceedings, or trial preparation.
