Compliance Counsel
Are you a practicing attorney ready to step out of the billable-hour grind and put your legal training to work on the business side of the firm? Do you want to be the trusted resource attorneys turn to instead of being the attorney billing the client? If you're looking for a way to leverage your legal knowledge and experience without the pressure of origination, hourly targets, or outside client management, this could be your next move.
Latitude is working with a leading law firm that is adding a Compliance Counsel to its risk and business intake function. The ideal candidate has experience practicing in a large law firm or comparable in-house legal environment, with the ability to issue-spot actual or potential conflicts of interest. The firm will provide extensive training, but the successful candidate will have sufficient experience to understand the nuances and issues that may arise when identifying and clearing conflicts in a law firm setting. In this role, you will run conflict checks, resolve conflict issues tied to lateral hires and new client or matter openings, draft and negotiate client engagement terms and outside counsel guidelines, and advise internal business intake teams on ethics rules and firm policy. The successful candidate should have a solid command of professional responsibility rules and the ethics requirements in the jurisdictions where the firm operates.
This is a hybrid role, onsite three days per week in Nashville, TN.
Basic Requirements for the Compliance Counsel:
- 4+ years of experience practicing law in a large law firm or comparable environment
- Working knowledge of law firm conflicts-of-interest clearance processes, including running conflict checks and resolving flagged issues before new clients, matters, or lateral hires are onboarded
- Strong grasp of contract principles, negotiation skills, and the ability to suggest and implement creative solutions when required
- Experience working with outside counsel guidelines and client engagement terms is preferred
- Familiarity with legal conflicts-checking systems or databases preferred but not required
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Licensed to practice law in Tennessee (or eligible for in-house exemption)
- Outstanding professional references
