Alabama State University, Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, invites applicants to apply for the position of Director of the Student-Athlete Experience. The Director of Student-Athlete Experience is responsible for developing and coordinating academic support programs that empower student-athletes to achieve their educational goals. This role ensures student-athletes receive timely and appropriate academic assistance while fostering strategies for academic success. The Director collaborates with university faculty, athletic staff, and support services to enhance the overall student-athlete experience, promoting both academic achievement and personal development. The university is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and is home to twenty (20) sports.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Assists student-athletes in developing effective academic strategies, direction, and personal discipline to achieve their educational goals

Monitors academic progress, enforces attendance policies and provides support to student-athletes identified for excessive absences

Acts as a liaison between faculty and student-athletes to resolve academic concerns and communicate performance updates to coaches

Enhances the university’s reputation and recruitment efforts by engaging with prospective student-athletes and their families, providing information on academic and student-athlete programs

Serves as an advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and leads career planning and community outreach initiatives, including the 4 for 40 program

Recruits, hires, trains, and evaluates student workers to ensure an effective and knowledgeable support team

Creates an inclusive and respectful work environment that fosters engagement across diverse backgrounds

Ensures adherence to NCAA, SWAC, university, and athletic department policies, promptly reporting any concerns or violations

Stays current in the field through professional development, networking, and training as required by leadership

Supports the overall success of the Student-Athlete Experience Office by performing other duties as assigned.
A Bachelor's degree is required; a Master’s degree in Counseling, Higher Education Administration, Sports Administration, or a related field is preferred. At least three years of experience is required in responsible positions in higher education where knowledge of academic advising and counseling has been obtained. Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations is required. Experience with student retention programs, academic support services, and counseling student-athletes is preferred. Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills are required. Computer literacy, particularly in word processing and database management is required. Organizational, management and supervisory skills are required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required. The position requires occasional evening and/or weekend work.
