Personal Care Aide / In-Home Caregiver
Job Description Position Summary
The Personal Care Aide (PCA) / In-Home Caregiver provides non-medical personal care, companionship, supervision, and homemaker services to clients in their homes in accordance with the client's individualized service plan and applicable South Carolina regulations. Caregivers assist clients in maintaining independence, dignity, comfort, and safety while promoting the highest possible quality of life.
This position does not perform skilled nursing services, medication administration, medical assessments, or any task that falls outside the scope of practice permitted for non-medical in-home care providers in South Carolina.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesPersonal Care Services
- Assist clients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including:
- Bathing and personal hygiene
- Dressing and grooming
- Toileting and incontinence care
- Ambulation and mobility assistance
- Transferring and positioning
- Eating and meal assistance
Companion and Supportive Services
- Provide companionship and social interaction.
- Engage clients in meaningful activities and conversation.
- Offer supervision and safety monitoring.
- Accompany clients on walks and recreational activities when authorized.
Homemaker Services
- Perform light housekeeping related to the client's care, including:
- Laundry
- Dishwashing
- Changing bed linens
- Dusting and vacuuming
- Organizing client living areas
- Assist with meal planning and preparation according to client preferences and dietary instructions provided by the client, family, or healthcare professional.
- Assist with grocery shopping and errands as authorized.
Safety and Observation
- Observe and promptly report changes in the client's condition, behavior, environment, or safety concerns to the Coastal Care office.
- Report suspected abuse, neglect, exploitation, accidents, injuries, or incidents immediately according to company policy.
- Maintain a safe and clean environment for clients.
Documentation
- Complete required documentation accurately and timely, including:
- Electronic Visit Verification (EVV)
- Service notes
- Incident reports
- Daily care records
- Follow Coastal Care policies regarding confidentiality and documentation standards.
Duties Not Permitted
The following tasks are outside the scope of this position unless specifically authorized by South Carolina law and Coastal Care policy:
- Medication administration
- Skilled nursing procedures
- Wound care
- Injections
- Catheter insertion or maintenance
- Tube feeding
- Assessment of medical conditions
- Taking or interpreting vital signs for clinical purposes
- Making medical decisions or recommendations
- Any task requiring professional nursing licensure
Caregivers may provide medication reminders and assist with self-administration as permitted by agency policy and South Carolina regulations.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
- Demonstrated compassion, patience, and professionalism.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Reliable transportation and valid driver's license if transportation services are required.
- Ability to pass all required background screenings and pre-employment requirements.
- Must successfully complete Coastal Care orientation and training requirements.
Preferred Experience
- Experience providing personal care services in a home care, assisted living, nursing home, or healthcare setting.
- Experience working with individuals who have dementia, Alzheimer's disease, developmental disabilities, or physical limitations.
- Familiarity with safe transfer and mobility assistance techniques.
- CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and reach frequently.
- Ability to lift, transfer, and assist clients safely in accordance with agency training.
- Ability to perform physical tasks associated with personal care and homemaker services.
Work Environment
Services are provided in clients' homes throughout Coastal Care's service area. Caregivers may encounter varying home environments and must maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and respect for client rights at all times.
