Administrative Assistant
Location: Juneau, Alaska
APEA/AFT is seeking a committed and detail‑oriented Administrative Assistant to support our Juneau office. This position plays a vital role in strengthening the union’s ability to serve members, protect workplace rights, and advance the collective power of Alaska’s public employees.

About the Position
The Administrative Assistant provides essential clerical and administrative support to union staff and members. This role requires professionalism, accuracy, discretion, and a deep respect for the values of solidarity and member advocacy. As the first point of contact for many members, the Administrative Assistant helps ensure that every interaction reflects the union’s commitment to service and justice.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and type correspondence, reports, grievances, lists, and statistical materials that support member representation and union operations.
- Receive and screen calls and visitors; provide accurate information; direct inquiries to appropriate staff; maintain confidentiality in all communications.
- Respond to routine questions regarding APEA/AFT structure, member rights, benefits, and ongoing projects.
- Process incoming and outgoing mail; maintain mail logs and other tracking systems.
- Establish, maintain, and update filing systems, grievance files, membership records, and resource materials such as arbitration decisions and labor agency rulings.
- Assist with maintaining the APEA membership database and records of active union members and their roles.
- Prepare and distribute large‑scale mailings to members, sometimes coordinating temporary staff to meet tight deadlines.
- Order and maintain office supplies and inventory to support daily operations.
- Operate standard office equipment; perform basic maintenance and coordinate repairs as needed.
- Arrange travel, lodging, meetings, trainings, and related logistics for staff and members.
- Perform courier and errand duties as required.
- Carry out additional duties that support the union’s mission and office operations.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Commitment to the values of the labor movement and respect for public employees.
- Strong command of business English, spelling, grammar, and professional correspondence.
- Knowledge of modern office practices, filing systems, and records management.
- Proficiency with standard office equipment and computers, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy under pressure.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to project a positive, professional impression of the union.
- Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of clerical office experience.
- Ability to type at least 30 words per minute.
- Experience with public contact is desirable.

Work Location: In person
