Primary Job Function:
The Reynoldsburg City Schools’ School Nurse is responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating school health services to support student attendance and achievement. The School Nurse facilitates positive student responses to normal development; promotes health and safety; intervenes with actual and potential health problems; provides case management services; and actively collaborates with others to build student and family capacity. This role ensures district compliance with Ohio Department of Health (ODH) mandates and Ohio Revised Code regarding student health.

Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution.

Licensure: Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Ohio.

Specialized Licensure: Valid Ohio Pupil Services License (School Nurse) issued by the Ohio Department of Education & Workforce (ODEW).

Certification: Current CPR/AED and First Aid Certification.

Experience: Experience working with pediatric populations or in a school health setting.

National School Nurse Certification.

Advanced experience in emergency triage or pediatric clinical assessment.

Clinical Care and Emergency Management

Provide high-level nursing care for sick and injured students and staff, utilizing clinical judgment to evaluate symptoms and determine appropriate treatment plans or emergency interventions.

Act as the primary responder for medical emergencies in the building, administering life-saving medications (e.g., Epinephrine, Narcan, Albuterol) as required.
Medication Administration and Medical Procedures
-
Oversee and perform the administration of scheduled and "as needed" (PRN) medications.

Perform complex medical procedures ordered by physicians, including but not limited to blood glucose monitoring, carbohydrate counting for diabetic management, and tube feedings.
Health Mandates and Screenings
-
Coordinate and conduct hearing and vision screenings in strict accordance with Ohio Department of Health (ODH) guidelines.

Manage the referral process for students who fail screenings, collaborating with parents and providers (e.g., Nationwide Children’s Hospital) to ensure follow-up care.
Immunization and Records Compliance

Review and input immunization records into student information systems (PowerSchool/SchoolCare) to ensure compliance with state law.

Report annual immunization data to the ODH and communicate with families regarding exclusions or required boosters.
Care Coordination and Case Management
-
Create and maintain individualized Healthcare Plans (HCPs), Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), and 504 Plans for students with chronic or complex medical conditions (Asthma, Diabetes, Seizures, etc.).

Serve as a medical liaison for the district, participating in IEP/504 meetings to ensure educational accommodations meet the student's health needs.
Supervision and Training

Provide medical oversight and clinical supervision for Building Health Aides, including signing off on medication delegations and ensuring clinic protocols are followed.

Educate staff on student-specific medical conditions, communicable disease trends, and universal precautions.
Documentation and Reporting

Maintain accurate, confidential electronic health records (EHR) in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA.

Monitor and report patterns of illness to local health departments to mitigate the spread of communicable diseases.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:

Ohio Revised Code and Ohio Department of Health regulations regarding school health.

National Association of School Nurses (NASN) standards of practice.

Communicable disease surveillance and reporting requirements.

Community health resources and social determinants of health.
Skilled in:

Pediatric clinical assessment and emergency triage.

Use of medical equipment (sphygmomanometer, stethoscope, pulse oximeter, audiometer).

Microsoft Office Suite and student information systems (PowerSchool, SchoolCare).
Ability to:

Communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including physicians, parents, and school administrators.

Physical Demands – While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with others. Working Conditions – The employee in this position may experience occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue. The employee may also be required to interact with unruly children.
