We are seeking an experienced and motivated Safety Officer to support a refinery construction project in Toledo, Ohio. This is a highly visible, field-based leadership role where you'll work alongside supervisors, skilled tradespeople, and project leadership to create a workplace where safety is integrated into every task. You'll be a trusted resource, providing hands-on coaching, identifying opportunities for improvement, and helping ensure every employee returns home safely at the end of their shift. Reporting to the Project Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with company policies, client requirements, and federal, state, and local regulations while promoting a proactive, positive safety culture throughout the project.
What You'll Do:
- Lead daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, and pre-job planning sessions.
- Conduct site inspections, audits, hazard assessments, and behavioral observations.
- Monitor field activities to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company policies, and client safety requirements.
- Review and support Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), permits, and safe work procedures.
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and hazards, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
- Coach, mentor, and support supervisors and field personnel to strengthen safe work practices.
- Build positive working relationships with employees through visible field leadership and proactive communication.
- Collaborate with project management and client representatives to achieve project safety objectives.
- Ensure safety documentation, inspections, permits, and regulatory records are accurate and up to date.
- Support compliance with OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) and EPA Risk Management Program (RMP) requirements.
- Promote continuous improvement through employee engagement, hazard recognition, and corrective action follow-up.
Required Qualifications
- OSHA 30 certification.
- OSHA #510 certification.
- Industrial construction experience.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, Process Safety Management (PSM), and Risk Management Programs (RMP).
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Valid driver's license.
- Excellent communication, leadership, coaching, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time-management abilities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic safety management systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ohio Journeyman Electrician.
- Experience supporting refinery or heavy industrial construction projects.
- H₂S certification.
- NFPA 70E certification.
- Professional safety designation such as:
- CHST – Construction Health & Safety Technician
- ASP – Associate Safety Professional
- CSP – Certified Safety Professional
