DUTIES:
- Conducts environmental health inspections and evaluations and recommends actions for programs requiring departmental approval, licenses, or permits.
- Provides environmental health services to residents and inspects facilities with environmental health significance, including food service establishments, public swimming pools, bathing beaches, on-site water and sewage systems, and sites involving alleged public health concerns.
- Enforces county and state laws, ordinances, and regulations.
- Performs subdivision reviews, water supply and sewage system evaluations, foodborne and waterborne disease investigations, groundwater contamination assessments, and other complex environmental health evaluations.
- Consults with architects, engineers, developers, and builders regarding sanitation requirements.
- Assists citizens and agencies with environmental health concerns, provides guidance to interested groups, and prepares detailed correspondence and reports.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in the field of environmental health, biological, chemical or physical sciences, or engineering and three years as an environmental health sanitarian working in general environmental health.
- If not yet registered with the State of Michigan as a Registered Sanitarian, the employee is classified as a “Sanitarian” and compensated one grade lower on the salary schedule.
- Candidates may qualify with an associate degree in environmental health, biological, chemical, or physical sciences, or engineering, along with a minimum of two years of experience in environmental health services, food service inspection, sewage treatment, or related duties.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- State of Michigan registration as a Registered Sanitarian.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with access to reliable transportation throughout the course of employment.
- Duties require sufficient mobility and physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position, including lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds, walking on uneven or slippery terrain, bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods.
- Work may occur in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments and under varying weather conditions and temperatures.
- In times of a public health emergency, may be required to report for specialized assigned duties inside or outside of Berrien County.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Working knowledge of modern environmental health practices, techniques, and programs.
- Knowledge of county and state laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations governing environmental health.
- Skill in applying environmental health principles to identify and address related problems.
- Ability to enforce regulations firmly, fairly, and tactfully.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for working with employees, agencies, and the public.
- Ability to present and explain environmental health topics to small and large groups.
- Ability to achieve compliance with applicable laws and regulations with minimal formal enforcement.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, organizations, agencies, and the public.
