CNC Lathe Setup & Programmer – Fanuc ControlsPosition Summary
Spartan Precision Machining is seeking an experienced CNC Lathe Setup & Programmer who understands machining from the ground up. This is a hands-on position for someone who can take a part from blueprint to production—develop the machining process, write or edit the program, set up the machine, prove out the first piece, and make the adjustments necessary to produce quality parts efficiently.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience programming with M&G code, working with Fanuc controls, and setting up CNC lathes and turning centers.
This is not a desk-only programming position. You will work directly with the machines, tooling, operators, production team, and quality department to develop reliable processes and solve real machining challenges.
Key Responsibilities
- Program, set up, and prove out CNC lathes and turning centers using M&G code and Fanuc controls
- Create new programs and edit existing programs directly at the machine
- Take jobs from blueprint through setup, first-piece approval, and production release
- Determine the proper machining sequence, tooling, workholding, speeds, feeds, and cutting parameters
- Set tools, establish work offsets, touch off tooling, and verify machine positions
- Troubleshoot programming, tooling, dimensional, surface-finish, and machine-related issues
- Optimize programs to reduce cycle time, improve tool life, and increase process consistency
- Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, tolerances, and GD&T
- Inspect first pieces and in-process parts using micrometers, calipers, indicators, height gages, and other precision measuring equipment
- Make tool-offset and program adjustments to maintain close tolerances throughout production
- Work with machine operators to ensure jobs continue running correctly after setup
- Collaborate with production and quality personnel to resolve issues and maintain delivery and quality requirements
- Document proven setups, tooling information, program changes, and process improvements for future production runs
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience setting up and programming CNC lathes or turning centers in a manufacturing environment
- Strong working knowledge of Fanuc controls
- Ability to write, read, edit, and troubleshoot M&G code
- Ability to independently set up, troubleshoot, and prove out CNC lathe jobs
- Strong understanding of turning, drilling, boring, threading, grooving, cutoff, and related machining operations
- Experience selecting tooling, inserts, speeds, feeds, and workholding methods
- Ability to read complex blueprints and understand GD&T
- Experience holding close tolerances and producing high-precision machined components
- Ability to use standard precision inspection equipment
- Strong mechanical aptitude and practical problem-solving skills
- Willingness to work hands-on at the machine and support production as needed
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with live tooling, sub-spindles, and multi-axis CNC turning centers
- Experience with macro programming, subprograms, canned cycles, and process optimization
- Experience improving cycle times, reducing scrap, and increasing tool life
- Experience machining steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and alloy steel
- Experience working in a high-precision or close-tolerance manufacturing environment
- CNC milling experience is helpful, but CNC lathe setup and programming is the primary focus
Why Join Spartan Precision Machining?
- Work on challenging, high-precision components rather than repetitive operator-only work
- Take ownership of jobs from programming and setup through successful production
- Have a direct impact on tooling, cycle times, quality, and manufacturing processes
- Work in a team-oriented environment where practical machining knowledge is respected
- Stable manufacturing operation with a diverse range of CNC equipment and customer programs
- Competitive compensation based on experience and capabilities
Compensation
Competitive pay based on CNC lathe experience, Fanuc programming ability, setup knowledge, troubleshooting skills, and overall machining capability.
