Business Purpose
The organization is migrating Collections services from a legacy mainframe batch application to a SaaS platform. During this transition, the current Computer Assisted Collections System (CACS) is being phased out for Collections Counselors; however, existing interfaces will continue to run to support downstream systems.
This role will focus on analyzing the current interfaces, defining the transition architecture, and engineering replacement solutions, including development and testing. In addition, there is an immediate need for a mainframe engineer to support the annual debt sale process, including execution of existing mainframe programs, output validation, and collaboration with other engineering resources. Most of this work is expected to be completed by mid-September.
Position Summary
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Mainframe Software Engineer to support application modernization and business-critical operational processes within a Collections environment. This role will be responsible for researching legacy systems, analyzing existing integrations, designing replacement solutions, and developing high-quality software that supports business operations and downstream system connectivity.
The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in mainframe technologies, strong software engineering fundamentals, and the ability to work across the full software development lifecycle—from architecture and development to testing, deployment, and production support. This position requires close collaboration with technical teams, stakeholders, and business partners to deliver scalable, maintainable, and efficient solutions in an Agile environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesLegacy System Analysis & Modernization
- Analyze the existing CACS application and its documented interfaces.
- Assess current integration points and identify required changes for downstream applications.
- Define architecture and design approaches for transitioning legacy processing to a modernized solution.
- Prepare technical design, architecture, and process documentation for proposed solutions.
- Engineer replacement software solutions, including development, testing, debugging, and deployment into integration/testing environments.
- Support migration-related quality testing and resolve defects identified during testing cycles.
Mainframe Engineering & Debt Sale Support
- Provide mainframe engineering support for the debt sale execution and validation process.
- Run existing mainframe jobs/programs and validate output accuracy and completeness.
- Partner with other mainframe engineers to support debt sale operational activities and related technical tasks.
- Perform additional engineering work related to batch processing, data handling, and interface support as needed.
Software Development & Engineering
- Design, develop, and optimize high-quality software applications using advanced programming languages, frameworks, and engineering practices.
- Write clean, scalable, maintainable, and efficient code aligned with enterprise coding standards and industry best practices.
- Implement efficient data structures, batch processing logic, and system workflows to optimize performance and reliability.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex software defects, application issues, and performance bottlenecks.
- Participate in and lead code reviews to ensure code quality, maintainability, and knowledge sharing across the team.
- Contribute to application and software development standards, policies, and engineering procedures.
Collaboration & Delivery
- Collaborate with engineers, business stakeholders, and subject matter experts to gather requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
- Work within an Agile/SAFe environment to deliver features, enhancements, and production support work.
- Lead small technical initiatives and contribute to project planning, execution, and continuous improvement efforts.
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Support team learning, mentorship, and ongoing improvement through collaboration and feedback.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- 10+ years of experience in application development, software engineering, or mainframe development.
- Strong experience working in legacy/mainframe environments and supporting business-critical batch processing applications.
- Advanced knowledge of software development lifecycle (SDLC), Agile/SAFe methodologies, and version control practices.
- Hands-on expertise with mainframe programming and tools, including:
- COBOL
- JCL
- DB2
- IBM z/OS mainframe utilities
- Syncsort / DFSORT / ICETOOL
- Experience with change management and scheduling tools such as:
- Changeman ZMF
- ESP or equivalent enterprise job scheduling tools
- Strong understanding of application integration, batch processing, data flows, and downstream system dependencies.
- Experience in software testing, quality assurance, and debugging in enterprise production environments.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to varied audiences.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of Collections business processes and financial services operational workflows.
- Experience supporting application modernization initiatives involving legacy-to-SaaS migration.
- Familiarity with enterprise interface analysis, system integration design, and transition planning.
- Experience leading technical initiatives, mentoring junior team members, and contributing to engineering best practices.
- Strong understanding of database structures, enterprise application architecture, and scalable software design.
