Position Summary
Eno River Academy is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and student-centered Part-Time Performing Arts Teacher to provide engaging performing arts instruction for middle and high school students. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in performing arts and a passion for helping students develop confidence, creativity, collaboration, communication, and performance skills.
The Performing Arts Teacher will design and deliver standards-aligned instruction that introduces students to the performing arts while providing opportunities for students to develop their individual talents. Depending on the candidate's expertise, instruction may include theater, acting, musical theater, stage performance, directing, improvisation, voice, movement, technical theater, production, and other related performing arts disciplines.
The teacher will contribute to a positive school culture by creating opportunities for students to showcase their work through performances, productions, showcases, assemblies, and other school and community events.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction and Curriculum
- Develop and deliver engaging performing arts lessons for middle and high school students.
- Create age-appropriate learning experiences that develop students' artistic, creative, technical, and performance skills.
- Plan instruction aligned with applicable North Carolina academic standards and school curriculum expectations.
- Differentiate instruction to meet students with varying levels of experience and ability.
- Teach students foundational and advanced concepts appropriate to their grade level and prior experience.
- Incorporate creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving into instruction.
- Provide students with opportunities to explore multiple forms of performing arts.
- Integrate technology and multimedia tools into instruction and performance when appropriate.
- Assess student learning through performances, projects, rehearsals, portfolios, written work, and other appropriate measures.
- Maintain accurate student attendance, grades, and instructional records.
Performance and Production
- Develop and facilitate student performances, showcases, productions, or other performing arts events.
- Lead rehearsals and prepare students for performances.
- Teach students appropriate rehearsal, stage, performance, and professional conduct.
- When applicable, support students in auditions, casting, script analysis, character development, stage movement, blocking, and performance preparation.
- Collaborate with students and staff to develop productions that reflect the school's mission, values, and community.
- Coordinate with school administration regarding performance schedules, facilities, equipment, costumes, props, sets, and other production needs.
- Supervise students before, during, and after performances and rehearsals.
- Ensure that all performances and production activities are conducted in a safe and appropriate environment.
Student Support and Classroom Culture
- Establish a classroom environment that is safe, inclusive, respectful, and supportive of creative expression.
- Build positive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
- Encourage students to take creative risks and develop confidence in their abilities.
- Support students in developing self-discipline, perseverance, teamwork, communication, and leadership skills.
- Maintain high expectations for student participation, behavior, and performance.
- Follow school policies and procedures related to student supervision, safety, discipline, and confidentiality.
- Communicate appropriately with parents/guardians regarding student progress and participation when needed.
Collaboration
- Collaborate with teachers and administrators to support interdisciplinary learning opportunities.
- Participate in school events, performances, showcases, and community activities as assigned.
- Collaborate with other arts teachers to create cohesive opportunities for students.
- Contribute to the school's STREAM model by identifying opportunities to connect performing arts with science, technology, research, engineering, and mathematics.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and other required school activities consistent with the part-time nature of the position.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Performing Arts, Theatre, Music, Dance, Education, or a closely related field preferred.
- Demonstrated experience working with middle school and/or high school students.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in one or more performing arts disciplines.
- Strong communication, organization, and classroom management skills.
- Ability to create engaging, age-appropriate learning experiences.
- Ability to work effectively with students with varying levels of artistic experience.
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
- Commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
- Ability to pass required background checks and meet all school employment requirements.
- Commitment to maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and student safety.
Preferred Qualifications
- North Carolina teaching license in Theatre Arts, Music, Dance, or a related area. (not required)
- Previous experience teaching performing arts in a middle or high school setting.
- Experience directing school or community theater productions.
- Experience with musical theater.
- Experience with technical theater, including lighting, sound, stage management, set design, props, costumes, or production technology.
- Experience choreographing or directing student performances.
- Experience integrating technology into performing arts instruction.
- Experience developing or managing a performing arts program.
- Experience working with students in competitive, community, or professional performing arts settings.

Work Environment
The position requires regular interaction with students in classroom, rehearsal, performance, and potentially stage or production environments.
The teacher may be required to:
- Stand, walk, demonstrate movement, and participate in rehearsals for extended periods.
- Move classroom or production equipment, props, furniture, or other materials as reasonably required.
- Work occasional evenings or weekends for performances or special events with advance notice.
- Work in environments involving stage lighting, sound equipment, theatrical materials, and other production equipment.
- Maintain appropriate supervision of students during rehearsals, performances, and school-sponsored activities.
