Handyman/Facilities Maintenance Position at Ivy Prep Early Learning Academy: Staten Island Location
About the Position
We are seeking a dependable, skilled, and safety-conscious Handyman / Facilities Maintenance Technician to join our team. This position is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, functional, and welcoming environment for children, families, and staff.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on problem solver who takes pride in their work, pays close attention to detail, and can handle a variety of general maintenance and repair tasks.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general handyman and building maintenance duties
- Complete minor plumbing repairs, such as fixing leaks, replacing faucets, and unclogging drains
- Perform basic electrical tasks, such as replacing light fixtures, switches, outlets, and bulbs, as permitted by applicable regulations
- Repair doors, locks, cabinets, shelves, gates, and other fixtures
- Perform basic carpentry, drywall, painting, patching, and touch-up work
- Assemble furniture, shelving, playground-related equipment, and other items
- Maintain and repair classroom, office, kitchen, and common-area fixtures
- Inspect the facility regularly and identify potential maintenance or safety concerns
- Help maintain safe and secure indoor and outdoor areas
- Assist with playground, fencing, landscaping, and outdoor maintenance as needed
- Handle routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs before they become larger issues
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests from school and daycare staff
- Keep maintenance areas, tools, and equipment organized and secure
- Maintain accurate records of completed work and report larger repair needs to management
- Follow all school safety procedures and applicable health and building regulations
- Perform additional facility-related duties as needed
Qualifications
- Previous handyman, maintenance, facilities, construction, or related experience preferred
- Knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and general repairs
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to safely use common hand and power tools
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently
- Strong attention to detail
- Good communication and customer-service skills
- Ability to prioritize multiple maintenance requests
- Must be comfortable working in an environment with young children
- Ability to pass required background checks and meet school/daycare employment requirements
- Valid driver's license preferred
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to perform routine maintenance tasks throughout the school and daycare facility
- Ability to move safely between classrooms, offices, common areas, and outdoor spaces
- Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull maintenance materials, tools, and equipment
- Ability to use ladders and safely access areas requiring routine maintenance
- Ability to perform tasks that may require standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, or working in various positions
- Ability to work safely while using hand and power tools
- Ability to work both independently and around children and staff in an active school/daycare environment
- Ability to respond to maintenance needs in a timely and safety-conscious manner
