Summary
The Fire Protection Design Engineers responsible for the design, layout, and coordination of fire protection systems for a variety of commercial, institutional, and industrial projects. This role works closely with engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams to develop code-compliant, efficient, and constructible fire protection designs. This position is located in Fairfax VA area.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Design fire protection systems including fire sprinkler systems (wet, dry, pre-action, deluge), fire alarm systems (as applicable), and standpipe systems and specialty suppression systems.
- Prepare detailed design drawings and construction documents using Autodesk Revit.
- Perform hydraulic calculations and system sizing.
- Coordinate fire protection designs with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and architectural disciplines.
- Interpret and apply applicable codes and standards, including NFPA standards (NFPA 13, 14, 20, etc.) and local and state building/fire codes.
- Assist with specifications, reports, and submittal reviews.
- Participate in project meetings and coordination efforts.
- Support construction administration, including RFIs and shop drawing reviews.
- Ensure designs meet project schedules, budgets, and quality standards.
Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred
- 4+ years of experience in fire protection design
- Experience in the AEC consulting environment preferred
- Proficiency in Autodesk Revit and/or AutoCAD
- Familiarity with hydraulic calculation software (e.g., HydraCALC, SprinkCAD, HASS, AutoSprink RVT) is a plus
- Working knowledge of NFPA codes and standards
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
- NICET certification in Fire Protection Engineering Technology (Level II or higher preferred)
- Experience with BIM coordination and clash detection
- Understanding of construction practices and field coordination
