POSITION OBJECTIVE
Working under limited supervision, the Research Assistant 3 will carry out complex small molecule discovery projects and validations in the Cardiac Therapeutics Laboratory. This position will use various molecular methods to bridge the gap of understanding between structure and experimental observations in cardiac muscle physiology. This research assistant contributes to multiple projects in the lab that are funded by NIH grants. This position will work with animals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Coordinate research activities including a wide array of cellular and molecular biology experiments using high throughput screening, cell-based assays, gel electrophoresis, western blots, and other in vitro techniques. Design, develop, and advance biochemical and cell-based high throughput screen-compatible assays for small molecule screening. (30%)

Work closely with the principal investigator and collaborate with scientists to adapt benchtop assays to automated workflows utilizing automated equipment available in core facilities. May supervise students and technicians. (10%)

Devise new protocols and techniques for research projects involving a high degree of skill and training. Execute high throughput screening (HTS) campaigns using multiple molecule libraries and analyze large, complex datasets to identify and prioritize hit compounds. (20%)

Execute and optimize bioassays to assess the potency of hit compounds in-vitro and in-vivo. (20%)

Evaluate adequacy of techniques; study and test new procedures and analyze, interpret, and clearly document experimental data, observations, and conclusions. (8%)

Prepare and present research results in lab meetings. May co-author research projects. (6%)
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

May monitor the lab budget. Maintain equipment, prepare buffer/media/reagents, and dispose of biohazardous waste. (3%)

CONTACTS
Department: Weekly contact with principal investigator and lab members to discuss research, maintain workflow, goals, lab operation/management issues, ordering, and reimbursement etc. Frequent contact with laboratory members in collaboration in common research project.
University: Occasional interaction with other faculty in the department and the university to provide updates on common collaborative research projects. Utilize core university facilities for experimentation and maintain strong relationships with core managers for research collaborations.
External: Occasional communication with research collaborators from other institutions to exchange information.
Students: Occasional contact with students who shadow/observe the research.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
No direct supervisory responsibilities. May supervise students and technicians.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: 3 to 5 years of related experience required.
Education: Bachelor of Science degree required.
REQUIRED SKILLS

Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures in chemistry, physics, biochemistry and molecular/cellular biology and in vivo cardiovascular function.

Previous experience working with animals preferred.

Experience in cell-based and/or biochemical assays.

Proficiency in basic molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry methods.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Working conditions will be standard laboratory environment with associated hazards, such as chemical and biohazards. Employee can expect to be working on a bench with molecular reagents and/or cardiac tissues, working with animal models/and bacterial cells in the laboratory, working in front of a computer for several hours, working outside standard working days or hours as required. The employee will work with frequent interruptions and distractions. The employee will need to take Chemical Safety Training and Biohazard Material Training. Other training may be required. Required personal protective equipment may include a standard lab coat, gloves and safety glasses when appropriate.
