The Oakland Housing Authority (OHA) Police Department is seeking experienced, community-focused law enforcement professionals to join our team as Lateral Police Officers.

What You'll Do
As a Lateral Police Officer, you will:
- Patrol Oakland Housing Authority properties by vehicle and foot
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service
- Enforce California Penal Code, Vehicle Code, and local ordinances
- Conduct criminal investigations and gather evidence
- Prepare detailed reports, citations, and legal documentation
- Make arrests and testify in court proceedings when required
- Build positive relationships with residents and community stakeholders
- Collaborate with local, state, and federal law enforcement partners
- Participate in specialized assignments and proactive crime reduction efforts
Specialized Assignment Opportunities
Qualified officers may have opportunities to serve in assignments such as:
- Criminal Investigations
- K-9 Unit
- Task Forces
- Community Policing
- Crime Prevention Programs
- Training and Field Training Officer (FTO) Assignments
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum age of 20½ years
- Valid California Driver's License
- Currently employed as a sworn peace officer or possession of a California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate
- Out-of-state candidates must be eligible for or obtain a California P.O.S.T. Basic Course Waiver
- No felony convictions
- Ability to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Successful candidates will demonstrate:
- Knowledge of California criminal laws and police procedures
- Strong report writing and communication skills
- Sound judgment and decision-making under pressure
- Safe and proficient firearms handling
- Effective conflict resolution and de-escalation skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Physical Requirements
Candidates must successfully complete the California P.O.S.T. Physical Agility Test, including:
- Obstacle course
- 165-pound body drag
- Six-foot fence climb
- 500-yard run
