Job Summary
SEARCH Homeless Services is seeking a compassionate and relatable Peer Mentor to support young adults (ages 18–24) who are pregnant and/or parenting. In this role, you will help participants build confidence, develop essential life and parenting skills, and feel supported as they navigate early parenthood and young adulthood.
As a Peer Mentor, you will use your lived experience to connect authentically with young parents and serve as a positive role model. You will walk alongside participants—offering guidance with everyday challenges, modeling healthy behaviors, and celebrating progress along the way.
You will also collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure participants receive the wraparound support they need to grow, stabilize, and move forward. Your ability to build trust, demonstrate practical skills, and create a supportive environment will play a key role in helping young families feel safe, empowered, and capable.
Key Responsibilities
Build Relationships & Provide Mentorship
- Develop supportive, trust-based relationships through empathy, respect, and shared experience
- Serve as a positive role model and help participants build confidence, emotional regulation, and problem-solving skills
- Provide one-on-one peer mentoring and support participants through daily challenges
Support Parenting & Child Development
- Provide hands-on guidance with infant and toddler care (feeding, bathing, soothing, safe sleep)
- Help parents establish routines and understand developmental milestones
- Model positive parenting techniques and offer real-time coaching
Teach Life & Daily Living Skills
- Assist with budgeting, meal planning, cooking, cleaning, and time management
- Demonstrate tasks step-by-step and support participants in practicing skills
- Encourage independence while maintaining a supportive, non-judgmental approach
Support Education & Employment Goals
- Help participants explore and pursue education opportunities (GED, vocational training, college readiness)
- Assist with résumé development, job applications, and interview preparation
- Connect participants to workforce development and community resources
Connect Participants to Resources
- Support access to benefits and services such as WIC, SNAP, Medicaid/CHIP, childcare, and mental health services
- Help participants navigate housing options and long-term stability planning
- Advocate for participant needs while promoting self-advocacy
Facilitate Groups & Build Community
- Lead or co-lead parenting groups, life skills workshops, and peer support circles
- Create a safe, inclusive environment where participants feel valued and supported
Documentation & Team Collaboration
- Maintain timely and accurate participant documentation in the agency database
- Share updates with the multidisciplinary team to inform service planning
- Participate in team meetings, case reviews, and coordinated care efforts
Transportation
- Transport participants to appointments, classes, or community activities as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required, Relevant lived experience is required, Prior experience mentoring/working with pregnant/parenting young adults.
Skills & Requirements
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and rapport
- Ability to coach, model behaviors, and provide hands-on guidance
- Comfortable working in a team-based, fast-paced environment
- Valid Texas driver’s license and a safe driving record for the past 3 years required
- Relevant lived experience required
- 2–5 years of experience mentoring or working with pregnant or parenting young adults preferred
Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
