Deckhand Position
The Fishers Island Ferry District is accepting applications for part-time (20 hours per week off-season, 40 hours during the Summer) Deckhands to work aboard our auto ferries that operate between New London, CT and Fishers Island, NY.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Under the Captains supervision, perform various duties onboard, assist passengers and assist with maintenance of the ferryboat. Under the supervision of the Marine Operations Supervisor, perform maintenance and repair tasks.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Steer a ferryboat between Fishers Island and New London as directed. Handles lines.
· Guide the loading and discharging of vehicles.
· Take a deck watch to insure the security of the ferryboat and cargo.
· Perform daily housekeeping duties onboard ferry when in dock.
· Perform general maintenance of ferryboats, i.e chipping, grinding, priming, and painting.
· Assist passengers on the ferryboat as necessary.
· May operate forklifts and tractors in order to pull the flats used to carry freight.
· Learn the procedures to effectively perform man-overboard, firefighting and other life safety functions.
· Clean and maintain New London terminal and terminal equipment.
· May be required to work unusual hours, including weekend and holidays.
· May be required to assist with any other ferryboat and terminal related duties.
QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:
· Knowledge of/able to learn vessel loading functions.
· Learn shipboard regulations and safety practices.
· Seamanship skills desirable.
· Knowledge of life-saving and fire-fighting equipment.
· Ability to act quickly and effectively during emergencies.
· Attention to detail and able to maintain accurate reports.
· Demonstrated ability to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
· Able to establish and consistently maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.
· Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
· Able to react and adjust quickly to changing conditions.
· Strong mechanical skills with knowledge and experience in marine equipment operations and repair desirable.
· Must possess skills in steering, operating equipment and maintenance of ferryboats.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
· Excellent or corrected eyesight.
· Able to perform continuous bending, twisting, stooping, reaching and lifting of moderate to heavy weight material (70-100 lbs.)
· Must be highly mobile, able to access all areas of the ferryboat.
· Able to concentrate and remain alert while working on repetitive tasks.
· Alert with sound judgment.
· Able to read, understand and carry out oral instructions.
The Ferry District operates seven days a week; morning, evening and weekend shifts should be expected.
