The City of Effingham Public Works Department is seeking candidates to fill two (2) Maintenance Worker I positions in the Public Property Division. These positions are full-time, with a starting wage of $27.07 per hour. Wage increases to $31.29 per hour after one (1) year of service. Wages incrementally increase as defined by union contract. Duties
- Performs a variety of vehicular operational tasks such as plowing snow, hauling salt, transporting stone and gravel, transporting tools, equipment, supplies, etc.
- Operates a tractor with power mower, rotary, or side bar attachment;
- Services and performs minor repairs on equipment;
- Directs traffic and guides truck operators in congested areas. Signals equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, or adjustment of machinery, equipment, or materials;
- Cleans and prepares construction sites to eliminate possible hazards;
- Loads and unloads gravel, dirt, timber, chemicals, and other materials, tools, and equipment;
- Loads, unloads, or identifies building materials, machinery, or tools, distributing them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans or specifications;
- Lays, repairs, and taps water mains;
- Mows grass and trims trees and shrubs in cemetery, parks, and other areas;
- Flushes and cleans sanitary and storm sewers to keep them running freely;
- Replaces or repairs water hydrants;
- Rods and maintain storm sewers;
- Lays water lines;
- Repairs and maintains manholes;
- Cleans catch basins;
- Patches holes in the street;
- Cuts curbs and sets forms;
- Cleans and repairs lift stations;
- Operates chain saws;
- Monitors gauges, dials, and takes measurements, samples, records findings;
- Various activities related to maintaining trees and other vegetation in right-of ways and on other City properties;
- Repair and replace signs according to the Uniform Traffic Manual, as well as other maintenance activities in rights-of-way;
- Ensures safety of operations;
- Performs duties as assigned at the water treatment plant and/or the wastewater treatment plant;
- Performs light to moderate carpentry repairs and construction;
- Maintains City cemetery and assists with cemetery services;
- Performs other related duties, as required.

Minimum Qualifications
- High school education or G.E.D.;
- Three (3) to six (6) months of related experience or training;
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school education or G.E.D.;
- Six (6) to twelve (12) months of related experience or training;
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
