AGENCY DESCRIPTION:
Washtenaw Area Council for Children (WACC) is a nonprofit organization based in Ypsilanti, Michigan, committed to preventing child abuse and neglect in Washtenaw County. As the State of Michigan’s designated prevention partner for Washtenaw County, WACC provides educational programs and services to children, youth, parents, community members, and youth-serving professionals designed to promote child safety and prevent child abuse and neglect.
GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Safe Sleep Prevention Specialist will facilitate safe sleep classes for expecting parents via Zoom or at a local organization. Conduct outreach to local agencies serving prenatal women and families parenting infants; work in collaboration with local organizations to implement safe sleep education programs/services and offer concrete resources to support infant sleep safety. Refer clients, as needed, to local resource organizations. Part-time position (15 hours per week @ $20-$22/hr depending on experience); hours worked are flexible based on community/participant availability, Monday - Thursday and occasional Saturdays.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Develop an effective safe sleep outreach awareness plan
● Ensure effective delivery of Safe Sleep training in addition to addressing Shaken Baby Syndrome and Period of Purple Crying (PPC)
● Attend regular meetings with Safe Sleep Coalition Members.
● Attend community events, as needed (i.e., baby showers, Safe Sleep month, etc.).
● Complete and submit all data collection, analysis, and reports in a timely fashion.
● Utilize existing resources to address other languages and cultures as needed.
● Other responsibilities as assigned by the Program Director.
QUALIFYING EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
● At least two years' experience working with expecting moms, new moms, and/or infants in perinatal settings preferred
● Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic
backgrounds.
● A Bachelor's Degree in education, child development, social work, or other related field.
● Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
● Ability to lift 10-15 pounds (supplies, course materials, etc)
● Willingness to speak in public is required; experience speaking in public (including teaching and workshop facilitation) is preferred.
● Submit to and pass a background check.
● Valid driver’s license and personal transportation for meetings across Washtenaw
County; mileage reimbursement provided.
● Strong written and verbal communication skills.
● Familiarity with PowerPoint and Excel software (Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, or
equivalent) and Social Media platforms.
SUPERVISION:
The Safe Sleep Facilitator will report to the Program Director.
CONDITIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:
