Position Title: Manufacturing Technician
Job Summary:
The Manufacturing Technician produces high-quality electro-mechanical assemblies, subassemblies, and finished systems in support of Bell and Howell’s service operations. Working from engineering drawings, Bills of Materials, and standard operating procedures, this role is responsible for building and validating products to specification, maintaining a safe and organized work environment, and meeting production targets. This is a hands-on, bench-level assembly role focused on accuracy, consistency, and quality output.
Job Responsibilities:
Assembly and Production
- Review assembly instructions, engineering drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) prior to beginning work; gather required tools, parts, and materials from inventory.
- Assemble electro-mechanical components, subassemblies, and finished systems in accordance with established procedures and engineering specifications.
- Perform adjustments and rework as needed to bring assemblies within specification.
- Verify BOM accuracy and communicate discrepancies to the appropriate team member.
Quality and Inspection
- Conduct visual and functional inspections of completed assemblies prior to release.
- Complete quality checklists and sign-off documentation as required.
- Identify and flag non-conforming parts or assemblies; escalate defects using established reporting procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and any issues encountered.
Workplace Safety and Organization
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area at all times in accordance with 5S standards.
- Follow all safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Report unsafe conditions or near-misses immediately to the supervisor.
Communication and Teamwork
- Communicate production status, material shortages, and areas of concern to the Manufacturing Manager.
- Collaborate with peers and other departments to support on-time production goals.
- Participate in team meetings and continuous improvement activities as requested.
- Contributes to manufacturing operations by supporting projects and continuous process improvements. Recommends process and design changes to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance overall production performance.
- Stays informed of production status and highlights areas of concern.
- Always maintains safe and clean working environment.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Competencies (Skills, Knowledge and Abilities):
- Ability to read and interpret assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, and Bills of Materials.
- Solid mechanical and/or electrical aptitude with strong attention to detail.
- Proficient with common hand tools, power tools, and basic test equipment (multimeters, calipers, etc.).
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions independently with minimal supervision.
- Good communication skills; able to clearly document work and flag issues.
- Team-oriented with a positive, reliable work ethic.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in electro-mechanical assembly or a comparable manufacturing environment.
- Associate’s degree in a technical field is a plus.
Travel:
- This position does not require travel in the United States and Canada.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch throughout the shift.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs to waist height and up to 25 lbs to overhead height.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to handle small parts and operate tools with precision.
- Color vision required to distinguish wiring and part markings.
- Close vision and depth perception required for detailed assembly work.
- Work is performed in a controlled manufacturing environment; noise levels within OSHA-acceptable safety limits.
