Position Description: Position Overview
The Project Superintendent – Grading plays a critical leadership role in executing civil, highway construction, residential, & commercial projects safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards. This position oversees day-to-day jobsite operations, field personnel, subcontractor coordination, production monitoring, project scheduling, DOT/agency compliance, and cost and quality controls.
The Superintendent must communicate and interact with all project partners, effectively and positively.
The Superintendent works closely with the Vice President, General Superintendent, Project Manager, subcontractors, and inspectors to ensure successful project delivery in accordance with plans, specifications, and DOT requirements.
Job Purpose
Superintendents are accountable for jobsite safety leadership, crew productivity, schedule performance, quality control, and overall project execution. This includes ensuring projects are constructed in strict accordance with plans, specifications, and regulatory standards. Superintendents serve as the primary jobsite leader and represent Park Construction with professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to our core values.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Project Execution & Site Management
- Schedule and coordinate subcontractors, consultants, and vendors along the critical path to ensure timely completion.
- Participate in preconstruction planning, including review of project schedules, budgets, traffic control, and staging requirements.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of contract drawings, specifications, addenda, RFIs, supplemental specifications, and DOT standards.
- Lead jobsite setup and startup, including safety postings, temporary utilities, security practices, staging areas, equipment, manpower, and field office layout.
- Open and secure the jobsite daily, ensuring readiness for operations and protection of equipment and materials.
- Perform daily quality control inspections for work in progress, including grading, utilities, concrete structures, and asphalt paving.
- Ensure subcontractors fully execute and comply with their contractual scope of work.
- Coordinate required inspections and verify correction of deficiencies.
- Identify and communicate conflicts in construction progress to the project team for resolution.
- Maintain accurate daily written jobsite logs documenting labor, equipment, inspections, weather, delays, and progress.
- Enter and verify daily production quantities, crew time, and equipment usage in field management software (HCSS Heavy Job® or equivalent).
- Ensure compliance with company equipment protocols, inspections, maintenance requests, and usage reporting.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional jobsite at all times.
- Manage job progress punch lists and ensure completion prior to project turnover.
- Supervise all subcontractors, consultants, vendors, and field personnel daily.
- Walk the project daily to monitor progress, plan upcoming activities, and identify potential issues.
Safety Leadership & Compliance
- Lead by example as the onsite safety champion, fostering a safety-first culture with participation at all levels.
- Enforce Park Construction’s Safety Program and ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, state, and federal safety regulations.
- Identify and promptly address safety, health, and environmental violations.
- Coordinate and support safety-related inspections with regulatory agencies.
DOT, Highway, and Civil Project Requirements
- Oversee excavation, grading, embankment construction, utility installation, roadway removals, structure support work, and asphalt paving operations.
- Verify material certifications, density testing, environmental controls, and compliance with DOT specifications.
- Coordinate closely with DOT representatives, inspectors, engineers, and third-party testing agencies.
- Manage traffic control operations, including lane closures, detours, flagging, and DOT compliance.
Field Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise, coordinate, and direct subcontractors, vendors, consultants, and craft employees.
- Mentor, train, and develop crew members; support succession planning for foremen and future leaders.
- Assist with hiring, evaluating, and developing craft and trade personnel.
- Support GPS layout, staking, and field measurement activities (GPS experience preferred).
Communication & Coordination
- Conduct weekly subcontractor coordination meetings.
- Communicate regularly with the Project Manager and General Superintendent regarding schedule risks, cost impacts, and field issues requiring resolution.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, inspectors, and project stakeholders to support successful outcomes and future work.
