As a Senior Database Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, performance tuning, resiliency, and modernization of database platforms across Azure and on-premises environments. This role supports business-critical platforms that power Casey’s stores, corporate operations, analytics, and digital experiences. You will work closely with our development, operations, security, and infrastructure teams to ensure our database platforms remain reliable, scalable, secure, and highly automated. Key Responsibilities:
- Perform day-to-day management and administration of SQL Server databases, including installation, configuration, maintenance, monitoring, backup, recovery, and continuous improvement of database platform reliability and resiliency.
- Monitor, optimize, and continuously improve database performance by identifying and resolving bottlenecks, implementing query tuning strategies, optimizing indexing and resource utilization, and driving proactive performance engineering initiatives.
- Implement and maintain database security measures, access controls, auditability, and compliance standards.
- Implement and test backup/recovery and disaster recovery strategies to ensure that data can be restored in the event of data loss, corruption, or platform failure.
- Troubleshoot database issues and provide timely resolution, while identifying opportunities to reduce recurring incidents through automation, monitoring, and process improvement. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support development, testing, and production environments.
- Apply database architecture, high availability, disaster recovery, and performance tuning best practices to improve platform reliability, scalability, and performance.
- Serve as the Microsoft SQL Server Subject Matter Expert (SME), influencing architectural decisions and leading the design, engineering, implementation, and modernization of production database environments.
- Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to DBAs and engineers while promoting database engineering standards, automation, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.
- Implement and manage the operational aspects of cloud-native and hybrid data platform solutions built on SQL Server and Azure SQL services.
- Analyze Azure SQL and hybrid database environments, recommending and implementing solutions that improve performance, scalability, reliability, security, and developer experience throughout the Software Development Lifecycle.
- Use automation and Infrastructure as Code principles to help create repeatable, scalable, resilient database platform patterns where appropriate.
- Support database platforms that enable operations across thousands of Casey's locations nationwide.
Compensation
Starting pay range: $102,200-140,500. Actual pay may vary based on Casey’s assessment of the candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs), related experience, education, and qualifications. Other factors impacting pay include local prevailing wages and internal equity. This position is eligible for an annual cash bonus based on company performance. Our full salary range for this role does extend beyond the typical hiring range listed, allowing team members the opportunity to continue to grow within the company.
Requirements:

- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- 5+ years of experience in database administration, database engineering, or data platform operations supporting enterprise database environments.
- Experience with data management disciplines, including data integration, data modeling, optimization, and data quality.
- Strong understanding of database architecture, administration, high availability, disaster recovery, security, and performance tuning.
- Experience supporting Microsoft SQL Server in production environments, including performance optimization, backup/recovery, and operational support.
- Demonstrated experience implementing, maintaining, testing, and validating Microsoft SQL Server High Availability (HA) technologies and concepts, including Basic and Always On Availability Groups (BAG/AAGs).
- Experience automating the execution and notification of database-related processes and alerts.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC), automation, Python, PowerShell, and/or shell scripting is strongly desired, including the ability to build repeatable, scalable, and resilient platform solutions.
- Experience working with database technologies and querying platforms including SQL Server, Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, Azure Synapse, or similar technologies.
- Oracle DB experience is a plus.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience supporting Azure SQL and hybrid cloud database platforms is preferred.
- Previous experience in the retail industry is preferred but not required.
- Microsoft certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate or other relevant SQL Server, Azure, or data platform certifications are preferred.
This role does not allow for 100% remote work. Qualified candidates must live within a daily commutable distance of Casey's Store Support Center in Ankeny, IA and be willing to work onsite 5 days per week.
