Medical assistants in an OB/GYN (obstetrics and gynecology) medical office have a blend of clinical and administrative responsibilities, all tailored to support women’s health care. Here’s a breakdown of typical job duties:
Clinical Duties
These focus on direct patient care and supporting the providers:
- Taking vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, weight, pulse)
- Documenting patient history and reason for visit
- Preparing patients for exams (e.g., pelvic exams, Pap smears, prenatal checks)
- Assisting with procedures, such as:
- Pap smears
- Colposcopies
- IUD insertions/removals
- Endometrial biopsies
- various other visits
- Collecting and labeling lab specimens, including urine and swabs
- Performing point-of-care testing, such as pregnancy tests or urinalysis
- Sterilizing and setting up instruments
- Giving injections, including vaccines and prenatal shots (under supervision)
- Charting and updating electronic health records (EHR)
Administrative Duties
These help keep the office running efficiently and ensure good patient communication:
- Scheduling appointments, including follow-ups and prenatal visits
- Verifying insurance
