School Speech-Language Pathologist - Travel & Local | Pennsylvania | 2026-2027 SY
Travel Pay Packages: $2,700 - $3,200 gross weekly. Each package is a blend of a taxable hourly wage plus non-taxable housing and meal stipends, which nets out comparable to an $85 - $105 per hour fully taxed salaried role. Stipend eligibility depends on maintaining a qualifying tax home under IRS rules, and we confirm your eligibility in writing before you sign.
Local Pay Packages: $60 - $85 per hour, for clinicians living within 50 miles of the assignment.
Sevn Workforce Solutions is hiring in-person School SLPs for Pennsylvania districts and Intermediate Units for the 2026-2027 school year. Pennsylvania has formally designated speech and language a shortage area, and it is filling those seats on emergency permits. That is a district telling you, on the record, that it needs you. We help you turn that into a better package.
Where We Place SLPs in Pennsylvania
- Greater Philadelphia and the collar counties - Philadelphia plus Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery, served by IU 22, 23, 24, 25, and 26.
- Greater Pittsburgh - Pittsburgh Public Schools plus the 42 suburban districts under Allegheny Intermediate Unit 3.
- Lehigh Valley - Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton, served by Carbon Lehigh IU 21 and Colonial IU 20.
- South Central Pennsylvania - Harrisburg, Lancaster, and York, served by Capital Area IU 15, Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13, and Lincoln IU 12.
- The Northern Tier, the Coal Region, and rural southwestern Pennsylvania - Bradford, Tioga, Susquehanna, Schuylkill, Northumberland, Fayette, Greene, and Washington counties. These are the itinerant caseloads that go unfilled, and they are where pay flexibility is highest.
A Pennsylvania note worth knowing if you are coming from out of state: a large share of school SLP roles here sit with the 29 Intermediate Units rather than with an individual district. IU assignments often mean a defined caseload across several buildings, with the IU as your day-to-day home base.
Why Pennsylvania Districts Are Paying a Premium
The Pennsylvania Department of Education's December 2025 Educator Workforce Report lists Speech and Language Impaired PreK-12 among the state's designated shortage areas, with 42 designations issued on emergency permits, alongside 101 in Speech Correction Elementary and 38 in Speech Correction Secondary. Pennsylvania has also put money behind it, funding grants of up to $5,000 each for as many as 100 SLP graduate students in school-based placements. When a state is paying to grow its own SLPs, the districts still waiting are the ones paying premiums today.
Why SLPs Are Choosing Travel Contracts
- 40-65% more take-home pay than a traditional fully taxed W-2 school role. Same work, same students, much bigger paycheck.
- Non-taxable housing and meal stipends lower your taxable income and raise your net pay. This is the engine behind the numbers above.
- A built-in adventure. Spend a school year somewhere you have been curious about. Test drive a new place for nine months before you ever commit to moving there.
- Students who truly need you. Many of these districts have gone months without an SLP. Your impact is immediate and visible.
- A stronger resume. New districts, caseloads, and populations add real range to your skill set.
- Real balance. Monday-Friday schedule, school holidays, summers off, and time between assignments to recharge.
Pennsylvania Credentialing - Simpler Than You Think, and Backwards From What You Expect
Most SLPs assume the state clinical license is what gets them into a school. In Pennsylvania it is the opposite.
- What you actually need: the Pennsylvania Department of Education Educational Specialist certificate, School Speech and Language Pathologist PK-12. This is the credential that authorizes school employment. Public school practice is expressly exempt from the Department of State clinical license.
- The fast lane for out-of-state SLPs: if you hold a Pennsylvania Department of State SLP license or an ASHA CCC-SLP, you can apply directly for the Educational Specialist certificate without completing a Pennsylvania educator preparation program, and no testing is required when either credential is verified. That is unusually clean compared with most states.
- If the certificate is still in process: districts and IUs that cannot fill a certified position can request an Emergency Permit, which requires a current and valid Pennsylvania professional license. This is a well-worn path here, not an exception.
- The state clinical license, if you need it, comes from the State Board of Examiners in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology under the Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs, Pennsylvania Department of State.
- Worth knowing: Pennsylvania is not yet a member of the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact. Enabling legislation passed the Pennsylvania House in July 2025 and remains pending in the Senate, so plan on Pennsylvania credentialing for the 2026-2027 year.
We file the Educational Specialist application, coordinate emergency permit sponsorship with the district or IU where required, and cover the fees.
Requirements
- Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program
- PDE Educational Specialist certificate, School Speech and Language Pathologist PK-12, or eligibility for one. We assist with the application, including emergency permit sponsorship where appropriate.
- CCC-SLP preferred, not required. It does remove the testing requirement for the PDE certificate.
- School or pediatric experience preferred
- In-person service delivery required
The 50-Mile Rule (You May Already Qualify)
You do not have to cross state lines to earn travel pay. If an assignment is more than 50 miles from your permanent residence, you may qualify as a traveler and become eligible for the non-taxable stipends that make these packages so strong. That could mean three states away, or two hours from home inside Pennsylvania. Plenty of our SLPs travel in-state and come home on weekends.
Within 50 miles of the assignment? You would work it as a local contract at a strong hourly rate instead. We will walk you through which path fits you, and confirm your stipend eligibility before you sign anything.
Do Not See Your Ideal District? We Build It.
Most agencies only offer what is already posted. Through our Reverse Marketing Program we work as your personal agent at no cost to you, contacting school districts and Intermediate Units in your preferred part of Pennsylvania to build an opportunity around you.
- You are the only clinician presented. No competing against a stack of resumes.
- Interviews turn into offers fast. These districts need someone now.
- Pay is often higher than standard postings because the need is urgent.
