Job Summary
We are seeking a dynamic and strategic Communications Manager join the On Point Team.
This Communications Manager develops and executes on public relations strategies, communications and marketing solutions for a major VDOT transportation project on behalf of On Point Transportation PR. This role will work with the VDOT Districtwide Communications Manager and Project Team in Norfolk, VA to execute on marketing/public relations strategies for assigned transportation project. Responsibilities include:
- Manage media relations to include handling media inquiries, pitching stories, and serving as spokesperson as requested. Establish and maintain media relationships. Develop message and talking points on current and emerging issues. Draft and distribute media alerts and releases, maintaining media contact lists.Candidates must be available to serve as media contact after-hours for crisis or emergency situations.
- Regularly visit construction sites and other locations to gather content for marketing materials by interviewing staff, gather photos and video footage and collect data needed for communications.
- Direct and manage internal and external communications to include newsletters, website maintenance and updates and social media. Assist with drafting and directing design for fact sheets, brochures and communications and weekly reports for project staff.
- Manage the planning and production of publications, videos and presentations.
- Lead, coordinate and participate in Public Outreach Events to include public meetings, project ribbon cutting, and other required events. Coordination includes planning, logistics, invitations, talking points, media pitch, speaker engagement and agenda development. Plan and implement internal events and celebrations as planned. Coordinate with District and Central Office teams as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism or related field (or equivalent training or experience)
- 7 or more years of experience in the field of marketing or public relations to include team and client management
- Prior experience working with a Marketing, Advertising or Public Relations agency preferred
- Advanced knowledge of communications methods and strategies as they relate to community and media relations
- Strategic thinker and independent self-starter
- Experience conducting and providing on-camera interviews
- Experience in government communications preferred
- Experience in transportation-related public relations or marketing preferred
- Demonstrated success in the professional use of social media platforms, including Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Instagram and Nextdoor.
- Strong writing and editing skills, familiarity with AP style guidelines, and tailoring content to different audiences and formats
- Ability to understand news media needs and knowledge of local media market
- Ability to maintain web site and use content management system with understanding of web development
- Proficiency in the use of computers and software applications to include MS Office products, Constant Contact, and CMS-based website management
Pay: $90,000.00 - $105,000.00 per year
