Position Overview
The El Paso County Transfer Station is seeking a reliable, detail-oriented Scale Clerk to join our operations team. As the primary point of contact for all vehicles entering and exiting the facility, you will be the "gatekeeper" of the station. This role is responsible for weighing vehicles, calculating fees, processing payments, and ensuring accurate data entry, all while maintaining a safe and efficient flow of traffic.

Primary Responsibilities
- Scale Operation: Operate electronic truck scales to weigh incoming and outgoing vehicles; determine net weights for waste disposal.
- Financial Transactions: Calculate fees based on weight and material type; accurately process cash, credit card, and commercial account transactions; balance the cash drawer daily.
- Data Entry & Record Keeping: Maintain precise electronic logs of all transactions, customer information, and waste types for regulatory and internal reporting.
- Customer Service: Greet residents and commercial haulers, provide clear directions to proper disposal areas, and explain facility rules and pricing.
- Load Inspection & Compliance: Visually check loads (where visible) to ensure compliance with county regulations and identify/reject prohibited materials.
- Traffic Control & Communication: Coordinate with heavy equipment operators and floor staff via two-way radio to safely manage vehicle flow on-site.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Experience: Minimum of 1 year in a cashier, customer service, or clerical role (experience in waste management, logistics, or scale operations is a major plus).
- Skills: Strong basic math skills for fee calculation and cash handling; fast and accurate data entry skills.
- Tech-Savvy: Ability to learn specialized scale-house software and comfortably use standard point-of-sale (POS) systems.
- Communication: Ability to remain professional, calm, and polite under pressure or when dealing with difficult customers.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- This position is based in a scale house/booth.
- Must be comfortable with exposure to outdoor weather conditions, dust, noise, and odors typical of a waste transfer station.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
- Schedule: Standard daytime hours, but may require occasional early mornings, late afternoons, or rotating Saturday shifts.
Pay: $19.00 - $24.00 per hour
