Hatchery Technician / Fish Culturist
Port Armstrong Hatchery – Baranof Island, Alaska

Work and live in a remote Alaskan setting while helping raise millions of salmon that support sustainable fisheries.
Port Armstrong Hatchery, located ~50 air miles south of Sitka and accessible only by floatplane or boat, is seeking a motivated Hatchery Technician or experienced Fish Culturist to join our team.
What You’ll Do
- Assist with all stages of salmon production: egg take, incubation, rearing, and release
- Feed and monitor fish; maintain raceways, water systems, and equipment
- Collect and record data
- Support harvest of returning adults
- Assist with maintenance, construction, and general hatchery operations
What We’re Looking For
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and positive attitude
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small, close-knit team
- Comfortable living in a remote location with variable weather
- Able to perform physically demanding work (lift up to 70 lbs)
Experience:
- Entry-level candidates welcome (interest in fish culture or outdoor work preferred)
- Fish Culturist applicants should have prior salmonid culture experience
Bonus Skills (not required): maintenance, construction, mechanical aptitude, diving certification
