Position Summary
The Clinical Nurse provides competent, patient-centered nursing care in an outpatient oncology infusion setting. The nurse is responsible for assessing patients, administering chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments, monitoring for adverse reactions, providing patient and family education, and coordinating care with the interdisciplinary team.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 1 year of nursing experience.
- Minimum 2 years of outpatient chemotherapy/immunotherapy infusion experience.
- Outpatient nursing experience required.
- Current, active North Carolina RN license.
- BLS certification through AHA or ARC.
- ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy certification required.
- ONS Fundamentals of Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Administration is not accepted.
Education
- Nursing Diploma, ADN, or ASN from an accredited nursing program required.
- BSN or MSN preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide safe, competent nursing care to patients receiving outpatient chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
- Administer chemotherapy, biotherapy, immunotherapy, and other prescribed infusion treatments according to established protocols.
- Administer blood products, IV iron, fluids, and electrolyte replacements while monitoring patients for adverse reactions.
- Perform port lab draws, injections, IV access, and other infusion-related nursing procedures.
- Complete comprehensive physical and psychosocial assessments and identify patient-specific care needs.
- Monitor patient responses to treatment and recognize changes in condition or potential complications.
- Develop, implement, and update individualized plans of care in collaboration with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team.
- Provide clear education regarding treatment plans, medications, side effects, safety precautions, and follow-up care.
- Assess patient and family readiness to learn and provide appropriate educational resources and emotional support.
- Communicate relevant patient information effectively to promote continuity and coordination of care.
- Prioritize care for patients with complex medical and oncology needs.
- Perform point-of-care testing as required.
- Follow organizational policies, nursing standards, chemotherapy safety protocols, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in quality improvement, professional development, and unit-based initiatives.
- Promote a safe, clean, secure, and patient-centered clinical environment.
- Assess and anticipate discharge needs and connect patients with appropriate multidisciplinary resources.
- Maintain current knowledge of evidence-based oncology nursing practices and applicable standards.
