Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Maintenance Mechanic to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong mechanical background and be mechanically minded as this role requires a proactive approach to troubleshooting and problem-solving, ensuring that all machinery operates efficiently and safely.
Working under the direction of the Water Treatment Supervisor, this position is responsible for routine preventive and emergency maintenance and repair of equipment, as well as troubleshooting operating systems (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) in the Water Treatment Plant or Supply Reservoir. Key duties include observing and maintaining mechanical equipment, performing repairs, operating heavy equipment, and participating in safety programs. The role also involves various unskilled tasks, reservoir maintenance, and vehicle inspections. A High School Diploma/GED and a Class B CDL are required, with a Class A CDL and Ohio Department of Agriculture pesticide spraying certificates preferred - the employer will pay for and provide the training required to acquire this license. The position demands heavy strenuous work, often outdoors, with exposure to various weather conditions and external elements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Observes mechanical equipment to ensure that it is operating properly. Checks oil and fluid levels in equipment, Dismantles devices and equipment for access and to remove defective parts, and to examine all parts for good repair. Recommends repairs/preventive maintenance to be performed;
- Starts devices and operates equipment to test performance;
- Repairs or assists in the repair of pumps, motors, valves, chemical feeders, compressors, actuators, and electrical devices;
- Lubricates parts;
- Takes equipment off line when necessary, and cleans it using a variety of power and hand tools;
- Locates and orders appropriate parts and materials, as necessary;
- Operates heavy equipment, such as backhoe, bulldozer, tractor, dump truck semi-tractor and trailer, and like equipment;
- Sets up and operates drill press, grinder, welders and other metalworking tools and equipment to make or to modify or repair parts;
- Develops and maintains a working relationship with sales and other vendor representatives, and with the general public;
- Participates in and recommends safety programs [e.g., Confined Space Entry; gas meters, MSDS, etc.].
- Performs various unskilled tasks, such as grounds keeping, cleaning, sweeping, and painting;
- Hauls lime sludge to fields or drying beds;
- Troubleshoots high rate sand filters, controls and diesel generators;
- Maintains general working knowledge of equipment used in Reservoir maintenance and grounds maintenance;
- Maintains working knowledge of heavy equipment used in Water Utilities grounds maintenance, including backhoe, mower, track hoe, dump truck, and trailer;
- Uses assorted hand tools necessary in the maintenance of Supply Reservoirs, dams, and inlets, including welding equipment, high-pressure torches, etc;
- Erects barricades; places safety lights, cones arrow boards, signs, and other traffic control and warning devices around the work site to protect workers from street traffic;
- Demonstrates familiarity with all aspects of safety pertaining to the tasks to be performed (e.g. confined space entry; trench safety; MSDS; proper procedures for respiratory protection when spraying for noxious plants, high voltage electric, fall protection, etc.);
- Inspects dikes and dams;
- Removes, cleans out, and replaces sluice boards in dams;
- Pumps water into reservoirs, when directed to do so;
- Operates reservoir valves;
- Replaces rip-rap when necessary;
- Cleans underground pipes;
- Controls pests, weeds, and algae in and around Supply Reservoirs, dikes and dams;
- Maintains a variety of over the water and underground structures, as well as stationary and mobile equipment;
- Suggests ways to improve equipment and production;
- Performs weekly inspections of vehicles and equipment;
- Works with other City Departments, when needed, to remove snow, pick up leaves, and like tasks around the Plant and Reservoir, as assigned;
- Performs other duties as required.
Education and Skills
- A Class A CDL with a tanker endorsement is preferred but not required to apply for this job. However, if hired, the City will provide training for the employee to obtain their Class A CDL, as it will be required to maintain employment.
- Ohio Department of Agriculture pesticide spraying certificates (All Chemicals) is required within one year after assignment to Reservoir Ground Maintenance tasks.
- High School Diploma/GED
- Working knowledge and experience with a variety of building/grounds maintenance tasks, HVAC, electrical system, carpentry, painting, structural repairs etc.;
- Ability to follow directions both verbally and in writing;
- Ability to communicate effectively.
