The Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) administers and promotes sustainable retirement plans and provides services our members value. We administer three cost-sharing, multiple-employer defined benefit plans; one agent, multiple-employer plan; and a defined contribution plan. These programs are tax-qualified retirement plans under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. PERA serves almost 500,000 current and former public employees from 3,400 employers participating in its pension plans. We pay monthly benefits to more than 139,000 retirees, members who are disabled, and survivors of deceased members.
Our 191,000 active members include social workers, firefighters, snowplow drivers, nurses, jailers, attorneys, paraprofessionals, and police officers. They work in our parks, cities, counties, and schools across the state. The services they provide and the work they do make our communities better.
