Overview
The Surgical Scrub Technician plays a pivotal role in delivering a world-class patient experience at a busy and growing spine practice. This position requires a motivated, patient-focused individual committed to delivering exceptional care and ensuring an outstanding experience for both patients and providers.
Responsibilities
- Utilizing your skills to assist the surgical team, set up and scrub for all surgical procedures.
- Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments and providing sterile items in an efficient manner.
- Assists with OR cleaning and restocking.
- Follow AAMI/AORN recommended practices for decontamination/sterilization of instruments.
- Cleans, wraps and prepares instruments for sterilization if needed.
- Operating as the sterile team member during surgical procedures - Maintaining aseptic technique and sterile field while anticipating the surgeon's needs.
- Incorporating knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology to anticipate the patients and surgeons needs.
- Proficient in the application of sterile technique in all aspects of patient care.
- Competent in the use of surgical instruments, supplies and equipment to provide patient care, troubleshooting minor malfunctions.
- Effective communication as a team.
- Work collaboratively with the surgical team consisting of physicians, nurses and anesthesia team.
- Prepare for surgery including draping for sterile field, preparing instruments and assisting the surgeon.
- Assist with other duties as assigned to help drive our Vision and fulfil our mission.
Work Environment
- Physical Abilities: Will be standing, walking and stooping for extended periods of time without relief during procedures/surgeries wearing a 15-pound lead apron and other necessary radiology PPE. Will be assisting with transferring of patient/large pieces of equipment (requiring ability to frequently lift 40 lbs.) Must be able to exert at least 25 pounds of force to assist with patient transports.
- Mental Abilities: Must have the ability to follow directions accurately and anticipate the needs of the surgeons during operative procedures.
- Dexterity: Will be operating delicate and sensitive equipment needing frequent adjustment. Repetitive motions of hands and wrists.
- Hazards and Risks: Exposure to ionizing radiation. Direct patients contact with possible exposure to communicable diseases, exposure to x-ray, and exposure to anesthesia gases and exposure to laser and electrocautery plume & beam (with potential for inadvertent burn or retinal damage).
Experience
- Proven experience as a Surgical Technologist or in a similar OR setting with a strong understanding of aseptic techniques and sterile processing.
- Demonstrated ability to perform suturing, analyze physiological data, and support acute care needs efficiently.
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) or equivalent credential is required; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is mandatory.
- Strong analysis skills combined with attention to detail in data collection and patient monitoring tasks are essential for success in this role.
License/Certification:
- Must be certified through one of the following Surgical Technologist Programs:
- CST (https://nbstsa.org/examinations-cst.html) at time of hire or obtain the certification within 12 months of hire
OR
- NCCT (https://www.ncctinc.com/General/VerifyCertification.aspx) at time of hire or obtain the certification within 36 months of hire.
Required Qualification:
- 1 year Surgical tech experience required.
- Practical knowledge of basic surgical instrumentation and equipment of Neurosurgery and orthopedic surgical procedures.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of aseptic technique and sterilization methods.
- Demonstrated knowledge of age-related growth and development principles necessary to provide appropriate service and assure safety of patients.
- Sterile Processing Department experience.
- BLS certification.
