Attachments Must Be In PDF FormatOpen Until Filled or June 5, 2026, whichever comes firstPrimary Reason Why Classification ExistsTo perform technical and skilled mechanical maintenance work in support of the operation, maintenance, and repair of machinery and equipment related to the wastewater treatment plant.Distinguishing Features of the ClassAn employee in this class performs journey level mechanical maintenance work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of heavy duty and specialized equipment in the municipal wastewater treatment plant. Work involves responsibility for maintaining and repairing a variety of pumps and motors and other equipment requiring specialized knowledge of trade skills in mechanical and plumbing areas. May assist with Pretreatment program and assist with lab duties in absence of Laboratory Analyst. Position may be designated as the primary back-up ORC at the discretion of the Wastewater Treatment Plan Superintendent, and in accordance with NCDENR and DWR regulations. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Wastewater Plant Superintendent and is evaluated on the basis of ensuring equipment operates within given time schedules and overall effectiveness of system performance.

Physical RequirementsThis is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring or testing devices, assembly of equipment, operating plant equipment, determining accuracy and thoroughness of work performed, and observing surroundings and activities. Working ConditionsWork is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions including extreme heat and extreme cold. Employee is subject to noise, vibration, and hazards, including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, exposure to chemicals, and atmospheric conditions. Employee is exposed to oils and greases, sewage flows and sludge, bacteria, and blood-borne pathogens. Employee is required to wear a respirator when necessary. Employee may frequently work in close quarters, crawl space, shafts, man holes, small enclosed rooms, small sewage and water lines, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia. Work around raw sewage is also subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. EducationGraduation from high school or equivalency supplemented by courses in mechanical or plumbing trades; preference is for a technical school training or Associate’s degree in mechanical trades and pump repairs.ExperienceSome direct experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of various mechanical, plumbing, and electrical equipment used in wastewater treatment plants and pumping stationsSpecial RequirementsValid North Carolina driver’s licenseWater Pollution Control System Operator Grade I certification or ability to obtain within 18 months FLSA Status: Non-Exempt DisclaimerThis classification specification has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification.
