Position Summary
The Facilities Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day cleanliness, upkeep, and physical condition of the Old Town Artisan Studios campus. This is a hands-on role that combines custodial work with general building maintenance and repair.
The Facilities Coordinator keeps studios, classrooms, shops, offices, and grounds ready for daily operations, classes, events, and public programming — completing routine repairs directly, coordinating outside vendors for specialized work, and identifying problems before they interrupt programming. Success in this role means the campus consistently looks cared for, equipment works when instructors need it, and issues are resolved quickly and communicated clearly.
Key Responsibilities
Custodial & Cleaning
- Perform daily and weekly cleaning of studios, classrooms, retail spaces, offices, restrooms, and common areas.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, and sanitize floors and surfaces; clean windows, doors, glass, and high-touch areas.
- Clean and restock restrooms and handwashing stations.
- Empty trash and recycling campus-wide and ensure proper disposal.
- Follow appropriate cleaning methods for studio environments, including wet-cleaning or HEPA vacuuming in ceramics and dust-generating areas rather than dry sweeping.
- Support post-class and post-event cleanup and room resets.
Building Maintenance & Repair
- Perform general handyman repairs across campus, including patching and painting drywall, adjusting and repairing doors, locks, hinges, and hardware, replacing ceiling and fixture lighting, and repairing or assembling furniture, shelving, and fixtures.
- Handle basic plumbing tasks such as clearing drains, replacing faucets and fixture components, repairing running or leaking toilets, and cleaning and maintaining clay traps.
- Handle basic electrical tasks within the scope of the position, including replacing switches, outlets, and ballasts, and resetting breakers.
- Mount and install equipment, signage, artwork, display hardware, and shelving.
- Maintain and troubleshoot studio equipment and fixtures in coordination with studio leads; escalate specialized repairs (kilns, HVAC, fire and life-safety systems, major electrical) to qualified vendors.
- Perform preventive maintenance on HVAC filters, water heaters, and other building systems on a scheduled basis.
Grounds & Exterior
- Maintain cleanliness and safe condition of walkways, patios, entryways, and parking areas.
- Perform light landscaping and irrigation upkeep, or coordinate with landscape vendors.
- Address exterior hazards such as trip hazards, debris, standing water, and lighting outages.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow established safety and sanitation procedures, including proper handling, labeling, and storage of cleaning chemicals and maintenance materials.
- Conduct routine walkthroughs to identify hazards, damage, or deferred maintenance and correct or escalate as appropriate.
- Support compliance with fire, life-safety, and accessibility requirements; ensure exits, extinguishers, and emergency equipment remain unobstructed and current.
- Maintain and properly use tools, ladders, and personal protective equipment.
Coordination, Vendors & Records
- Serve as the primary on-site contact for facilities vendors and contractors; schedule visits, provide access, and verify completed work.
- Track and prioritize maintenance requests from staff and instructors, and communicate status and timelines.
- Monitor inventory of cleaning supplies, consumables, and repair materials; request restocking and purchases through established procedures.
- Maintain basic records of repairs, preventive maintenance schedules, warranties, and vendor contacts.
Qualifications Required
- Two or more years of combined custodial, maintenance, handyman, or facilities experience.
- Working knowledge of general building maintenance.
- Ability to safely use hand and power tools and to work from ladders and at heights.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize competing requests, and manage time without close supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and consistent cleanliness standards.
- Dependable, punctual, and respectful of shared studio and workspaces.
- Clear written and verbal communication sufficient to log work, report issues, and coordinate with staff and vendors.
- Valid California driver's license and reliable transportation for occasional supply runs.
Preferred
- Experience maintaining facilities in a school, studio, community, or public-facing environment.
- Bilingual English/Spanish.
- Certifications or trade coursework in facilities maintenance, HVAC, electrical, or plumbing.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach for extended periods; climb ladders; and lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Work involves exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, and both indoor and outdoor conditions, including heat.
Pay: $24.00 - $28.00 per hour
