GENERAL PURPOSE
The Beautification/Landscape Laborer is responsible for the appearance and maintenance of entryways and public green spaces in the City of Ocean Springs.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May provide assistance in the supervision of seasonal and/or temporary laborers.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the supervision of the Beautification/Landscape Supervisor and under the general supervision of the Public Works Director.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists in the daily operations of the beautification and landscaped areas within the City of Ocean Springs.
- Maintains maintenance of all landscaped areas including installation of plants, flowers, shrubbery, trees, mulch and other items to beautify the City.
- Must possess the ability to safely use gardening hand tools and equipment including chainsaws, mowers, hedgers, augers, and tool sharpening equipment.
- May provide training to the seasonal laborers in the proper and safe use of hand tools and mechanical equipment necessary for the performance of the assigned duties.
- Plans, prioritizes and implements work schedules.
- Completes the necessary paperwork such as work orders.
- Maintains assigned equipment and notifies supervisor of repair needs.
REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
A high school graduate or its equivalent. Experience in a manual labor position directly related to outside activities or an equivalent combination of education and experience that results in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is required.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Working knowledge of trees, shrubs, annual plantings.
- Functions and proper care of tools, equipment, and materials used in landscape maintenance work.
- Theories and practices of landscape planning and design.
- Principles and practices of landscape management, horticulture and landscaping.
- Procedures and techniques of pesticide and herbicide application.
- Plant and tree diseases and pests including control and eradication methods.
- Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city officials, colleagues, vendors, and the general public.

This position is required to sit, stand, and walk for a sustained period of time; the ability to see and hear; bend and lift up to 100 pounds. Work requires the ability to differentiate between colors, climb, crawl, stoop and possess physical dexterity.

Employee will work out doors in all types of weather. This position typically performs work in a poorly lit and inadequately heated and ventilated environment. May be subject to adverse weather conditions, toxic agents, and hazards associated with the operation of various motor driven and hand held power tools and equipment.
