POSITION SUMMARY: The Independent Living Support Aide provides assistance to residents in an independent living community, ensuring they maintain autonomy while receiving support with daily tasks. This role focuses on light housekeeping, personal assistance, and animal care, fostering a safe, clean, and engaging environment for residents. The aide does not provide medical or skilled nursing care but enhances the quality of life by offering practical assistance and companionship.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
PERSONAL ASSISTANCE & DAILY LIVING SUPPORT

Provide standby assistance with dressing, grooming, and personal hygiene as needed.

Assist with mobility support (helping residents move safely with walkers, canes, or wheelchairs).

Offer medication reminders (but not administer medications).
-
Assist with meal preparation, serving, and cleanup.

Support routine scheduling and appointment reminders.
LIGHT HOUSEKEEPING

General tidying of living areas, kitchens, and bathrooms.

Laundry and linen care (washing, folding, and changing bed linens).

Sweeping, vacuuming, and light mopping of common areas.

Dusting and wiping down surfaces, tables, and countertops.

Taking out trash and recycling as needed.
-
Watering houseplants upon request.
ANIMAL CARE
-
Refilling food and water bowls based on resident instructions.

Cleaning litter boxes and pet areas.
-
Walking small to medium-sized dogs and assisting with potty breaks.

Providing playtime and companionship to pets.
-
Basic grooming assistance (brushing fur, checking for cleanliness).
SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE ENGAGEMENT

Encouraging participation in community activities and social programs.

Providing companionship and conversation to promote emotional well-being.

Assisting with technology use (helping residents with phones, tablets, or video calls).
-
Supporting hobby-related activities based on resident interests.
SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL/VOCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Maintains a current certification in good standing as a Certified Nursing Assistant in Massachusetts or proof of completion of an approved Home Health Aide course.
JOB SKILLS:

Experience in elder care, home care, hospitality, or related field preferred.

Empathy, patience, and strong communication skills.

Ability to work independently and follow individual service plans set by the resident or management.

Basic knowledge of senior wellness and safety precautions.

Comfortable working around pets and performing light housekeeping tasks.

Ability to lift up to 25 lbs for household tasks (e.g., laundry, light lifting).
ENVIROMENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- May need to reach overhead, handle objects, use finger dexterity, talk, hear, see, and feel

May need to move, transport or position objects up to 40 pounds

Continuous moving, standing, climbing, frequent periods requiring sustained uncomfortable physical conditions

May need to ascend/descend stairs, operate foot controls, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and twist

May need to work in an environment with noise, vibrations and occasional fumes

May need to work in protective clothing, when company policy and common sense so dictates

Works in office area(s) as well as throughout resident apartments

Moves intermittently during working hours and is subject to frequent interruptions

Works beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary,
- Is subject to call-back during emergency conditions (e.g. severe weather, post-disaster, etc.).
- ls subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., throughout the workday, as well as to reactions from dust, disinfectants, tobacco smoke, and other air contaminants
