Job Summary:
The Laboratory Accessioner plays a critical role in the specimen testing process by receiving, labeling, and accurately entering patient and specimen data into the laboratory information system (LIS). This role ensures the integrity of specimens by following proper protocols for handling, identification, and documentation. The accessioner acts as a key liaison between collection sites, couriers, and lab personnel to ensure smooth workflow and timely processing.
Responsibilities
- Receive and inspect incoming specimens (e.g., blood, urine, swabs) for accuracy and integrity.
- Accurately label specimens and match them with accompanying documentation or requisitions.
- Enter patient and specimen data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) with a high degree of accuracy.
- Verify test orders and ensure proper test coding and priority status.
- Maintain chain of custody procedures when applicable.
- Communicate any discrepancies or issues with specimens to appropriate personnel promptly.
- Work collaboratively couriers, lab techs, and customer service representatives.
- Follow all safety and biohazard protocols in compliance with OSHA and company guidelines.
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace, including proper specimen storage.
- Perform routine clerical tasks such as filing, faxing, scanning, and data entry as needed.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required; Associate’s degree in a science-related field is a plus.
- Previous experience in a medical laboratory, specimen processing, or data entry required.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks.
- Communication and teamwork skills.
- Proficient in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office, LIS systems).
- Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory procedures is advantageous.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $20.00 - $21.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40.0 per week
