Job Overview
We are seeking a highly organized and proactive Gastroenterology Surgical Scheduler to join our dynamic healthcare team. Duties
- Schedule surgical procedures accurately within electronic health record (EHR) systems such as g Med Epic, Meditech, Athenahealth, or eClinicalWorks, ensuring all necessary documentation is complete.
- Verify insurance coverage and perform insurance authorization and verification processes to facilitate smooth preoperative planning.
- Review medical records and documentation to confirm patient eligibility, medical necessity, and compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Coordinate with physicians, anesthesiologists, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals to confirm operative dates and prepare care plans.
- Manage patient communication by providing clear instructions regarding preoperative preparations, fasting guidelines, and post-surgical care.
- Maintain detailed records of scheduling activities, cancellations, reschedules, and related correspondence for audit purposes.
- Assist with billing processes by ensuring accurate CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) coding and ICD (International Classification of Diseases) coding for surgical procedures.
- Utilize computer skills including Microsoft Office suite for documentation review, report generation, and data entry.
- Handle multi-line phone systems with professionalism using excellent phone etiquette to address patient inquiries or rescheduling needs.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA standards by safeguarding patient information during all scheduling activities.
Experience
- Previous experience in a medical office environment or healthcare setting is required; clinic or hospital experience is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated proficiency with EMR systems such as Epic, Meditech, Athenahealth, or similar platforms is essential.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, CPT coding, ICD-9/ICD-10 coding systems, and medical billing procedures is necessary for accurate documentation and billing support.
- Experience in medical scheduling within surgical or outpatient clinics is highly desirable.
- Bilingual abilities are a plus to effectively communicate with diverse patient populations.
- Familiarity with insurance verification processes and Medicare guidelines will enhance your success in this role.
- Excellent organizational skills combined with attention to detail are critical for managing multiple schedules efficiently.
