Philly House is a non-denominational, evangelical Christian program affiliated with the City Gate Network. The center city men’s shelter serves approximately 200-300 homeless individuals daily. At that same location, we are Philadelphia’s largest homeless meals program, serving 3 meals per day for 365 days of the year. See www.phillyhouse.orgfor more information.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
For those who love to cook, enjoy being on a team and relish the challenges that come with responsibility, this FULL-TIME POSITION supervises and coordinates the preparation, cooking, and serving of food to homeless men in Philadelphia. The ideal candidate will be a follower of Jesus Christ with a heart of service to those in need.
The Kitchen Associate will be responsible for everything that goes on in our kitchen. Not only will you be required to oversee all menus from start to finish, you are also tasked with supervising and directing other staff and volunteers, meeting health and safety standards and putting smiles on the faces of our meal guests.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
· Overall responsibility for the kitchen’s daily operations on your assigned shift(s).
· Provide outstanding guest services to both volunteers and meal guests;
· Give direction and guidance to meal volunteers;
· Liaising with the Food Services Manager for food purchases.
· Directing and giving guidance to all staff and volunteers.
· Monitoring and controlling stock levels, reporting to Director of Food Services of shortages.
· Ensuring correct stock rotation procedures are followed.
· Maintain a clean and well organized work area to remain compliant to health code and inspections;
· Taking care of the kitchen’s supplies and equipment and are in working order.
· Prepare food items according to recipe to ensure quality and consistency;
· Maintains sanitation of equipment, supplies and utensils to remain compliant to health code and inspections;
· Drive a box truck for food pickup and delivery, as needed;
· Perform other duties as assigned;
QUALIFICATIONS
As an employee of Philly House you are an important member of a Christian organization. All staff members are required from time to time to participate in Christian chapel services, outreach ministries, or prayer time. Because of the nature of these types of ministries it is an absolute necessity that you possess and maintain a testimony or lifestyle that is above reproach. What you do on your own time may seriously affect your ability to perform these types of ministries, which are an important part of your job. Adherence to Philly House Statement of Faith and Core Values is needed.
REQUIREMENTS
· Serve Safe certified is required;
· Possess a valid PA driver’s license(preferred);
· Possess excellent understanding of food production and fundamental cooking techniques;
· Ability to function well as part of the kitchen team;
· Must demonstrate a friendly, professional demeanor and maintain composure under pressure;
· Be a high energy, enthusiastic person, displaying an affinity for serving the homeless;
· Be willing to follow directions and established procedures;
· Possess good communication skills;
· Must have an understanding of the mission, vision and values of Philly House and be able to communicate this information;
· Adherence to our Employee Policy Manual;
· A public Christian witness and a regular devotional time to maintain your relationship with our Lord, Jesus Christ;
· Personal qualities of maturity, humility, strong work ethic, and a roll-up-my-sleeves attitude;
· Demonstrated experience with and sensitivity to varying cultural, ethnic, and social backgrounds, values and attitudes;
· Possess tact, diplomacy and flexibility in person and on the phone;
· Good listening skills are required and the ability and desire to engage in well-considered discussions;
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position is primarily performed indoors in the kitchen of our Ministry, requiring the ability to navigate hallways and multiple floors. The ability to stand and work on your feet for multiple hours is required. The ability to lift 25-50 pounds regularly is expected. Random and odd evening and weekend hours may be required.
COMPENSATION
Philly House is a Christian nonprofit organization. Competitive salary wages will commensurate with experience. No relocation assistance is available. Health benefits are available upon request. A successful candidate must successfully pass criminal background check and sex offender screenings.
