DEPARTMENT: PARKS AND RECREATION
REPORTS TO: PARKS SUPERVISOR
LOCATION: 32 CHURCH STREET
HOURS: 7:30AM – 4:00PM 5 days/week. (Optional-4 day/ 10-hour/day work week)
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Parks Supervisor, performs manual work and some skilled labor at parks, beaches and school grounds. Work frequently involves heavy lifting and strenuous tasks and is usually performed out-of-doors involving exposure to varying climatic conditions. Cuts grass, weed whacks, grooms ball fields, uses loader and other equipment, and performs other parks and grounds maintenance duties as assigned. Considered essential personnel in times of weather emergencies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs various maintenance tasks related to outside parks and grounds maintenance including cutting grass, ballfield maintenance, weed whacking and all other maintenance related task asked of the department.
- Operates mowers, tractors, loaders, and other equipment.
- Services equipment.
- Hauls equipment on trailers.
- Repairs picnic tables, fences, bleachers and other Parks & Recreation equipment.
- Maintains parks, lawns, ball fields, and other Town and school properties.
- Maintains synthetic turf field.
- Removes leaves, twigs, and branches from town properties, including Guilford Green.
- Picks up litter.
- Cleans restrooms, as necessary.
- Performs minor carpentry and painting.
- Assists various contractors in grounds and recreational equipment installation and maintenance.
- Works overtime for snow removal and other weather-related emergencies, as required.
- Works overtime for beach cleaning, ballfield maintenance, and special events, as required.
- Works in teams or independently on various tasks.
- May assist at times in training of newer staff on basic jobs function and areas of responsibility.
- Attends any and all safety training programs offered by the Town of Guilford.
- Complies with all proper safety procedures and regulations.
- Treats other employees, and any others with whom there is contact, with courtesy, respect and professionalism.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of tools, equipment, materials and methods of maintaining athletic fields, grounds, and recreation facilities.
- Skills in interpersonal relations.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment Human Performance Evaluation.
- Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
- Ability to perform heavy manual work under adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to read and write.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
- Ability to work overtime, as required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; crawl; and talk and hear.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to eighty (80) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- High School Graduate as well as a minimum of three (3) months of experience in performing heavy manual labor or turf maintenance, landscaping or equivalent.
- Must have and maintain valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle operator's license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally may work near moving mechanical parts, is occasionally exposed to airborne particles and fumes and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. In such cases, as a safety measure, a respirator will be provided and must be used. Eye protection and ear protection devices are provided and must be worn near moving and/or loud mechanical parts.
The noise level in the outside work environment can be loud and provided eye and ear protection is required when using power equipment.
